Dr. Wu Quan's collection covers nearly 4,000 years of Chinese art and culture, and is one of the last finest collections of Chinese art in Europe today. In 2022, the Dr. Wu Quan Collection has achieved remarkable results in New York, Hong Kong and London, with the Qianlong Imperial Purple and Red Brocade Qiankun Jiaotai Rotary Flask and the Qianlong Emperor Qianlong's Imperial Treasure Taishi Shaoshi Niu Shoushan Stone Seal from Kangxi to Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty both sold for more than 100 million yuan, setting off a wave of Dr. Wu Quan's collection in the market. Earlier this year, Sotheby's London launched the first part of the collection's online sale, and now presents the second part of the online sale from 8 to 15 December.
The Legend of Dr. Wu Quan
This collection is special and comprehensive, and was integrated by Wu Quan (Wu Hengzhi), the son of the politician Wu Lianbo (1873-1944) during the period. Dr. Wu is a true collector. His collection focused on Chinese art before collecting stamps and books. After his retirement, Wu Quan returned to London to devote himself to the study of Chinese archaeology and art, each of which was thoroughly studied before entering the collection. He was a close friend of Professor Cheng Tak-kun (1908-2001), a scholar of Chinese art and archaeology at the University of Cambridge, who mentored Dr. Wu in the early stages of his collection and inspired his passion for Chinese art. There is no doubt that Dr. Wu Quan's collection over the years has coincided with the appearance of a large number of Chinese art treasures on the London art market. From the mid-1950s to the late '60s, he acquired more than 1,000 works in every genre of Chinese art. Dr Goh received bids from the auction from Sir David the Great, Brenda Zara Seligman, Henry Knight, Nellie Ionides and Hr.n.Norton and other collectors of the early 20th century, but the most representative of that legendary era of British collecting is the collection of Alfred Morrison (1821-1897). Morrison's collection of treasures at his mansion in Wiltshire, England, includes some of the pinnacle of imperial porcelain from the 18th and 19th centuries of the Qing Dynasty. In 1965 and 1971, the Morrison family auctioned the collection, and Dr. Ng was able to auction no less than five imperial treasures at that time, which are now the focal points of his collection. Opened in 1968 in the southern countryside of the British Isles, the museum in the residence of Dr. Wu Kuen and named after his father, Wu Lianbo, has served as a gathering place for collectors, scholars, visiting guests and insiders over the years. Dr. Wu is always enthusiastic to take visitors on the tour and tell the story of China's glorious history. To this day, the Wu family continues to protect the collection with all their heart, lending them from time to time and publishing two catalogues in 2011 to continue educating future generations.
