A Christmas match that decided to change the fate of the club

In 1983, Brentford Football Club struggled financially and in league terms, and planned to host a Christmas match to increase spectators and revenue. Innovative chairman Martin Lange wants to revive the tradition of the Christmas game and attract 10,000 spectators. However, the decision was opposed by supporters and local residents, as the day happened to be Sunday, and Brentford promised not to play at home.

Lange eventually reversed the decision due to community opposition. The match was rescheduled for Christmas Eve, the last English football league match to be played on this day. Wimbledon beat their opponents 4-3, attracting 6,689 spectators.

Despite the defeat, Brentford's players were relieved to have a day off on Christmas and Boxing Day, ahead of the next game. The team went on to win two games, ensuring their survival in the league. Lange's innovative ideas, which included the introduction of play-offs and player numbers, failed to be fully appreciated during his lifetime as Brentford suffered setbacks and failed to qualify. However, in 2021, Brentford finally realised Lange's vision for the club and secured promotion from the Premier League.
