1989, New Year's Day party.
In the black-and-white TV, many people are relish a sketch of "Night Return": a pair of foreign men and women, playing a short story that causes laughter because of the late return of their husbands.
Because the background is the family building in the Northeast, the actor "Xu Dashan" is wearing a military coat and wearing a *** mouthful with the smell of Northeast ballast, "Magnolia, open the door, I am Dashan", "Look at what you said, sleep!".The audience burst into laughter.
And this Canadian boy named Mark Henry Rothwell also became famous because of it.
Not only was he affectionately called "Big Mountain" by the Chinese audience, but he also appeared on the Spring Festival Gala for four years after that, becoming the first foreign cross talk person to appear on the stage of the Spring Festival Gala.
After that, Dashan continued to transform, from cross talk to talk shows, and then to short ** bloggers, which can surprise the audience every time.
Last month, after many years away from the Chinese stage, 58-year-old Dashan once again appeared in a crew in Beijing.
This time, he is no longer a comedian wearing a Tang costume on stage as a New Year's greeting, but turning into a friend of banker Andy in the Chinese version of the drama "The Shawshank Redemption".
Time flies, and the handsome young man on the stage of the Spring Festival Gala has become a middle-aged man with gray hair.
However, as long as he went to that station, the one who clasped his fists and shouted: "Happy New Year!".The mountain that brought countless joys to the audience is back.
Dashan became famous more than 30 years ago, and his relationship with China can be traced back to the twenties of the last century.
In 1922, Dashan's grandfather, as a surgeon, was sent by the Church of Canada to work in the "Guide St. Paul Hospital" (Shangqiu First People's Hospital) in Shangqiu, Henan, and was respectfully called "Dr. Rao".
At that time, Dashan's grandmother traveled with her husband and brought her three children under the age of 6 to China to treat the suffering of the common people.
After 3 years, they left China.
Because of the war, their two children died of tuberculosis and were buried in China, and in the end, only one child was brought back to Canada.
This experience had a profound impact on the Daisen family. Therefore, when Dashan was very young, he often listened to his father tell stories about China, which made Dashan full of curiosity and yearning for China since he was a child.
Dashan's relationship with China began in the summer vacation of the year he graduated from high school.
Because he likes photography, Oyama works part-time at a photo studio.
There is a Chinese colleague in Dashan, and because of the language advantage, many Chinese customers are served by this colleague.
Dashan on the side watched them chatting and felt that Chinese was very charming. "It's very interesting, it's so nice, it's so mysterious. He was thinking, if he could learn two Chinese words, it would be great!
So, he asked his colleagues for advice and said that he wanted to learn Chinese.
The colleague readily agreed, but asked him:"Chinese has two very different languages. One is more academic, used in the classroom, and the other is Chinese spoken by ordinary people. Which one are you going to learn?”
Dashan thought that he had graduated from high school, and if he didn't go to school, it was good to learn the language of the common people.
So, he chose the second option.
However, Dashan did not know that the Chinese he learned at that time was not Beijing dialect, but Cantonese.
Therefore, Dashan first learned Cantonese such as "Listen to the Less, Speak Less", "Top Your Lungs", and even made a lot of jokes at work because he didn't know much about semantics.
However, these episodes did not dissuade Dashan, but aroused Dashan's enthusiasm for learning Chinese.
In 1984, Oyama was admitted to the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto. Out of his interest in Chinese, he took a modern Chinese course.
After that, he plunged headlong into the ocean of Chinese culture and was fascinated by learning.
By the time he was a sophomore, the elective could no longer satisfy Dashan's thirst for knowledge, so he simply changed his major to Chinese studies, and his Chinese level was becoming more and more sophisticated.
In 1988, Dashan graduated with a bachelor's degree and received a full scholarship with the first grade in his major.
It so happened that at this time, the school had an opportunity for Chinese and Canadian students to exchange, and Dashan took the opportunity to study Chinese and Chinese literature at Peking University.
He wanted to experience Chinese culture firsthand and find his roots in the place where his grandfather worked.
At that time, Dashan would never have imagined that in the second year of his arrival in China, a heaven-sent opportunity would befall him again.
In 1989, the director of CCTV's New Year's Day party had a whim to let foreign students perform a program at the party, so he sent an invitation to Peking University.
And Dashan is a literary and artistic element in Peking University, has hosted a campus singing competition, excellent Chinese level and funny hosting style, has been recognized by teacher Wang Wenquan, so he recommended Dashan to the director of the Spring Festival Gala.
After that, the success of the sketch "Night Return" brought the mountain full of simplicity and humor into the hearts of the audience.
After starring in the sketch, Dashan did not become interested in the sketch, but fell in love with cross talk.
The first time he came into contact with cross talk, he was deeply attracted by "Big News" starring Jiang Kun and Tang Jiezhong, and listened to it repeatedly whenever he had time.
After a long time, he came up with the idea of learning cross talk.
At that time, Jiang Kun was a powerful name in the cross talk circle, so Dashan reverently expressed his love for cross talk to Jiang Kun, hoping that Jiang Kun could accept him as an apprentice.
Worried that Dashan's Chinese could not reach the point of pure fire, and second, Master Hou Baolin opposed him to accept foreign apprentices, so Jiang Kun refused Dashan's request.
But Dashan did not give up because of this, and often practiced cross talk in addition to studying, and then found Jiang Kun through teacher Wang Wenquan and asked for apprenticeship again.
It was this perseverance and several contacts with Dashan that made Jiang Kun see this young man's determination to learn cross talk.
So, at the end of 1989, Jiang Kun officially accepted Dashan as an apprentice.
Sometimes, Jiang Kun can't take care of it because of his busy work, so Dashan learns cross talk from his master Ding Guangquan.
Talent coupled with diligent study, Dashan has made rapid progress, and even Hou Baolin took off his colored glasses back then, declaring in public: "Dashan is my ***."
Oyama burst into tears on the spot.
He said:"Because after three or four years of hard work, I think it is a high honor to be recognized by him. ”
Soon, Dashan ushered in the spring of his career.
He has cooperated with many big names in "Sending Spring Festival Couplets", "A Stamp", "Joy and Joy", "New Sayings of Five Senses" and other masterpieces, all of which have been highly praised.
From 1996 to 2011, Dashan appeared on the Spring Festival Gala several times, and his popularity was no less than that of the current first-line stars.
While the career is soaring, love is also quietly coming.
In the fall of 1990, when Dashan was performing in Liaoning, he met a girl named Gan Lin.
At that time, because of the conflict between the singer and the guitarist of the band, Gan Lin, as the coordinator, was a little difficult to deal with. At this time, Dashan stepped forward and took the initiative to help Gan Lin solve the problem.
This righteous act made Gan Lin have a good impression of him, and Dashan also fell in love with Gan Lin in the subsequent contact. After going back and forth, the two fell in love.
After 3 years of dating, they got married.
At that time, Dashan had no car, no house, and no stable job in Beijing. Both of them are a little confused about the future, and the parents of both are not very optimistic about this marriage.
However, all this did not affect the relationship between the two couples. A few years after marriage, he had a pair of children, and Dashan's career was getting better and better.
However, in order to chase stars, many fans have traveled thousands of miles to see the mountains, which has caused ** to follow the trend, and his pair of mixed-race children are often discussed by people around them because of their appearance, which has caused them a lot of trouble.
After careful consideration, Dashan decided to let his wife and children return to Canada to live and stay in China to develop.
After that, Daisen began to live a life of traveling between the two places, and it continued for many years.
As a result of the perennial study and dissemination of Chinese culture, Dashan has also become a bridge between the cultures of China and Canada.
He has participated in various Sino-foreign cooperation and exchange activities, and has been named one of the "Top Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Beijing" and has also won the "Order of Canada" of Canada, a lifetime achievement award from Canada.
In 2008, he attended the Olympic Games in China as a special envoy to the Canadian delegation and joined the Canadian Embassy in Beijing as a public affairs assistant.
One day in 2011, Feng Gong said to Dashan: "If a person wants to continue to succeed, he must step out of his comfort zone." ”
At that time, with the rise of Deyun Club, Dashan's cross talk career also began to decline.
After listening to Feng Gong's advice, he decided to transform into a talk show.
Because I was exposed to talk shows when I was a child, and I have many years of cross talk skills, in 2015, "Dashan Kan Dashan" was born, and Dashan held the first personal special "Dashan Kan Dashan" in Beijing, and the effect was very good.
At that time, talk shows were still very new in China, but listening to Dashan's vivid storytelling made many viewers feel both novel and interesting.
After that, he went on a world tour, and the response was overwhelming.
In 2017, "Dashan Kan Dashan" appeared at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, becoming the only Chinese program in the comedy festival.
Later, Dashan also produced "Dashan Laughing Friends", which combined the poems, idioms, fables and other elements of traditional Chinese culture with Western talk shows to present to the audience in a new form of comedy.
He believes that it doesn't matter what form you use, the core of comedy is to make the audience happy.
On January 12, 2020, Dashan was invited to perform at the Overseas Chinese Spring Festival Gala in Toronto.
As soon as he opened his mouth, it was a standard Beijing accent, which made the audience's eyes shine, although "time turned him from a young man to Saddam", but many netizens ridiculed "His Chinese language is better than mine." ”
And from the restless mountain, from the summer of 2020, I have tried a new business - ancient poetry short**.
During the epidemic, he couldn't go out, and in order to facilitate his creation, he converted his home stable into a studio.
In the past 3 years, he has recited ancient poems on Douyin, sharing his understanding and emotions of ancient poems.
Thoughtful", "Liangzhou Ci", "Slow Voice" ......Each work has received hundreds of thousands of likes, some even hundreds of thousands, and this time "cross-border", Dashan has undoubtedly succeeded again.
When reading "Dengyouzhou Taiwan Song", he said that he liked the artistic conception of "I don't see the ancients before, and I don't see the comers after", which is very beautiful. He also said: People who have had the experience of climbing high and looking far will understand the feeling of "thinking about the world and the world, and being alone and crying".
He also used rock music to "sing" Li Bai's famous "Will Enter the Wine". The trill, bass and drum beat factors make "Will Enter the Wine" more modern literary style.
Dashan read the poem "unexpectedly out of the circle, even surpassing Dashan's talk show "Dashan Kan Dashan".
By chance, director Zhang Guoli watched Dashan's ** on the Internet, and suddenly thought:
Oyama's style suits Rhett in his drama "The Shawshank Redemption" and the narrator of the story's narration.
And Dashan was even more surprised: a piece of pie fell from the sky, and this must be tasted.
Although the job is not easy, Dashan still enjoys it.
Every day, he starts from 10Ride a bicycle to the crew for rehearsal 8 kilometers away, and then ride back at 8:30 p.m. I also record the memorized lines in the morning and listen to them repeatedly while riding to find and correct problems.
He is also very serious about the details, picking out word by word, down to a certain paragraph, whether he can bring dirty words or not, he has to pick out with the director.
In order to make his image closer to the character, the 58-year-old Dashan is determined to start **, and strive to polish a work that satisfies him.
No wonder Jiang Kun once commented that Dashan treats his work extremely hard and seriously.
To this day, it still is.
Over the past 30 years, from cross talk to talk show, from short ** to drama actor, Dashan's identity has been constantly changing, and the only thing that remains unchanged is the love and expression of Chinese culture that has penetrated into his bones.
The people ** once commented on the mountain:Although he is a foreigner, he is not an outsider.
He himself said: Although he is a foreigner, his heart is Chinese.
What is commendable about Dashan is not his artistic achievements and his outstanding contributions to the study and dissemination of Chinese culture over the years.
Rather, for decades he demanded of himself:
We have been in the development of the times, constantly working hard, learning, thinking and improving.
Just like the sculpture works of sculptors, in the long course of time, sculptures themselves continue to become better people.
