Block volumes provide networked storage for use with your Oracle Cloud Infrastructure instance. After you create, attach, and mount a volume to your instance, you can use it as if you were using a physical hard disk on your computer. A volume can only be attached to one instance at a time, but you can unmount it from one instance and attach it to another to keep the data intact. This task will show you how to create a volume, attach it to an instance, and then attach the volume to the instance. For complete details about block volumes, see Block Volume Service Overview. Open the navigation menu and tap "Storage". Under Block Storage, click on "Block Volumes".
Click "Create Block Volume".
In the Create Block Volume dialog box, enter the following:
Created in Cloud Service Platform: This field defaults to your current cloud service platform. If you haven't already, select the cloud service platform where you want to create the volume.
Name: Enter a user-friendly name. Avoid entering sensitive information.
Availability domain: Select the same availability domain as your instance. If you follow the tutorial instructions to launch your instance, this will be the first availability domain on the list. The volume and instance must be in the same availability domain.
Size: Enter 256 to create a 256 GB block volume.
Click "Create Block Volume".
A 256 GB block volume will appear in the list as in configuration. When a volume is no longer in the configured state, you can attach it to your instance. Next, you'll attach the volume to your instance over an iSCSI network connection: Find your instance: Open the navigation menu and click Compute. Under "Compute", click "Instances".
Click on your instance name to view its details.
In the Resources section, click Attached Block Volumes.
Click on "Attach Block Volume".
Enter the following:
Volume: Select the Select Volume option.
If you need to change the cloud service platform, click Change cloud service platform, and then select the cloud service platform where you created the block volume.
Volumes in Cloud Services Platform: Select a block volume from the list.
Attachment Type: Select iSCSI.
CHAP credentials required: Remain unchecked.
CHAP is a secure protocol. For the purposes of this tutorial, you can leave this box unchecked. When setting up a production environment, Oracle recommends that you require CHAP credentials.
Click "Add".
The attaching process takes about a minute. When the attachment status of a volume is Attached, you'll know that the volume is ready. After your volume is attached, you can configure the iSCSI connection. Once the connection is configured, you can mount the volume on the instance and use it as if you were using a physical hard disk. Connect to your volume: Log in to your instance as described in Connect to your Windows instance.
Open the navigation menu and tap "Calculate". Under "Compute", click "Instances".
Click on your instance name to view the instance details.
In the Resources section, click Attached Block Volumes.
Click the Actions menu (...) next to the volume you just attachedThen click on "iSCSI Commands and Info".
The iSCSI Commands and Info dialog box opens. Note that the dialog box shows specific identifying information about your volume (such as IP address and port) as well as the iscsi commands you can use.
On your Windows instance, open the iSCSI launcher.
For example, open Server Manager, click on Tools, and select iSCSI Launcher.
In the iSCSI Launcher Properties dialog box, click the Discover tab.
Click on "Discover Portal".
Enter the IP address and port of the block volume. Click OK.
Click the "Goals" tab.
In the Discovered Targets area, select the IQN of the volume.
Click "Connect" and then click OK to close the dialog box.
Now you can format (if needed) and mount the volume. To get a list of mountable iSCSI devices on your instance, in Server Manager, click File and Storage Services, and then click Disks.
A disk of 256 GB will appear in the list.
After you've completed the resources you created in this tutorial, clean up by terminating the instance and deleting the resources that you don't plan to continue using. Open the navigation menu and tap "Calculate". Under "Compute", click "Instances".
Find your instance in the list of instances and click its name to display its details.
On the instance details page, click Attached Block Volumes.
Find your volume and click on the Actions menu (..)Then click "Uninstall".
Click "Continue Uninstalling" and then tap OK.
You can delete the volume when the console shows that the volume status is Unmounted. Open the navigation menu and tap "Storage". Under Block Storage, click on "Block Volumes".
Find your volume and click on the Actions menu (..)Then click "Terminate". Confirm when prompted.
Open the navigation menu and tap "Calculate". Under "Compute", click "Instances".
In the list of instances, find the instance that you created in the tutorial.
Click on the Actions menu (..)Then click "Terminate".
Select the Permanently delete attached boot volumes check box, and then click Terminate Instance.
Open the navigation menu, tap Networking, and then tap Virtual Cloud Network.
In the list of VCNs, find the one you created in the tutorial.
Click on the Actions menu (..)Then click "Terminate".
Click "Terminate All" to delete all the underlying resources of your VCN.
When all assets have been successfully deleted, you can close the dialog.
