Next summer, there will be 13,000 more flights from Schiphol than previously announced. The airport has announced that it will be able to accommodate 483,000 flights for the whole of 2024.

The Netherlands** has withdrawn plans to downsize its airports for next year, legally with room for 500,000 flights. But after discussions with agencies such as air traffic control and customs, Schiphol decided that the figure was unrealistic.

The actual number of flights that can depart from the airport also depends on the capacity of the Royal Gendarmerie, Customs and Air Traffic Control. In the spring of 2022, there was a lot of chaos at the airport, mainly due to staff shortages, which Schiphol Airport wanted to avoid.

The flight schedule coordinator is responsible for allocating the number of take-off and landing rights (so-called flight slots) and assigning these flight numbers to airlines.

Schiphol said this allocation must consider how to reduce flights during peak hours to avoid queues.

KLM said it was pleased with the increase in the number of flights, but stressed that it now has less time to prepare for it. In response, the company said: "KLM will of course do everything in its power to operate the allocated number of flights. ”

In 2023, Schiphol Airport is expected to operate a total of 433,000 flights.
