Qian Liu's group at McGill University is now recruiting doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows for annual admission
McGill University is a top 50 public research university in the world (2024 QS International University Ranking: 30). The school is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with a long history and a comfortable and convenient living environment.
Introduction of the research group.
Qian Liu's group used a self-built super-resolution microscope based on single-molecule localization technology and structured light fluorescence microscopy to study the process of virus infection and the cellular innate immunity and epidemic prevention mechanisms involved in the process.
This year's postgraduate project mainly involves the use of super-resolution microscopy techniques and mathematical models to study the assembly and release of viruses in host cells.
The results of the project can be published in top professional journals. During the study period, you can receive considerable scholarship funding, and there are many opportunities for communication and presentation at international conferences. During your studies, you will also have the opportunity to exchange and cooperate with Canada**. The employment direction of graduates includes, but is not limited to: universities and research institutes, non-profit institutions involved in infectious disease control and epidemic prevention, biologics and drug research and development enterprises, and microscope imaging centers. Students with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research are welcome to apply.
Entry Requirements:
Graduate: (McGill University has two intakes a year, September and January.) See:
1) Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in the following related majors are required before admission: Cell Biology, Virology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Immunology, etc. Postdocs need to have independent research ability and have scientific research results published in professional journals.
2) Relevant experience in laboratory study and work in the field of biology and imaging, and demonstrate strong independent work and scientific research ability.
3) Strong English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
For more information, please refer to the McGill University Graduate Admissions webpage
If you are interested, please print out your CV, research interests (no more than half a page) and the contact information of two referees. The PDF file is sent to [email protected]。
If you are interested in applying for a PhD full scholarship at CSC, please note this in your CV.
dr. liu is interested in understanding the interplay between viruses and the membrane bound organelles, cytoskeleton and physiological activities of the host cell, as it relates to the nature of virus infections, innate immune responses and the structure and function of a cell. specifically, her research has been focusing on mapping out the spatial and temporal organizations, dynamics and stoichiometry of the virus-host interaction networks by using super-resolution microscopy and biomathematics approaches.
her research largely depends on custom-built super-resolution microscopes, including a single-molecule localization microscope with a 10 nm spatial resolution and a confocal structure illuminated microscope().
successful candidates will work on projects that address questions in virus assembly and budding. successful candidates will h**e access to
1) custom-made super-resolution microscopes that can be adapted to your own research purposes;
2) a dynamic, highly motivated team with diverse culture and knowledge backgrounds;
3) excellent core facilities equipped with cutting-edge commercial microscopes;
4) opportunities for attending international conferences and interactions with leaders in academia, government, and industry.
applicants must h**e strong interest and motivation in interdisciplinary research.
applicants must hold a b.sc. or m.sc. degree in cell biology, virology, microbiology, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology or related fields by the time of the appointment starts. experience and skills in biology and imaging laboratory are highly appreciated. applicants must show proficiency in english writing and speaking.
applicants who are not canadian permanent residency or citizen are encouraged to apply for external funding.
please send your application in one .pdf file including curriculum vitae, a statement of research interest (one paragraph) and the contact information of two references to dr. liu ([email protected]).
