On December 14, Greece's Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Dimitris Kerides, introduced an innovative amendment to the immigration law – the Occupational Insurance Reform. This is the first time that immigration law has been integrated with labor law.

This amendment provides the possibility of a special residence permit for third-country citizens who have entered the country illegally before November 30, 2023 and who have been residing in Greece for at least 3 years.

At the same time, if the applicant's spouse or children have also resided in Greece for at least 3 years before the above date, they are also eligible for this residence permit. This residence permit is valid for 3 years and can be used to work as an employee or to provide a specific job.

According to this amendment to Greece's immigration law, a citizen of a third country who meets the following conditions can obtain a residence permit for work, known as a special residence permit, which can be used to perform employment work or to provide specific work:

1) Third country citizens must have a job offer from a Greek employer for dependent work, service projects or specific work and prove the right to work (a clean criminal record and an employment contract are required);

2) Third country citizens must have entered Greece by November 30, 2023 and have resided in Greece for at least 3 years (even if they do not have a residence permit, they must have resided in Greece until that date);

3) Citizens of third countries who continue to reside in Greece beyond the above-mentioned dates;

4) Citizens of third countries must have lived in Greece for at least 3 years and have an employment contract before submitting an application for a residence permit.
