Guangming**Suzhou, December 20 - Comrade Pan Junhua, a member of the Communist Party of China, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a well-known expert in applied optics, and a researcher at the School of Optoelectronic Science and Engineering of Soochow University, died in Suzhou on December 18, 2023 at the age of 94.

Pan Junhua, a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu, was born in October 1930. He joined the party in January 1983. He started his career in August 1952. He has successively worked in Changchun Institute of Optics and Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Nanjing Astronomical Instrument Factory, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In May 2000, he was hired as a researcher at the Institute of Modern Optical Technology of Soochow University. He used to be a director of the Optical Society of China and an executive director of the Chinese Astronomical Society. In 1999, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Pan Junhua is the founder of optical testing instruments and optical manufacturing technology in China, and a pioneer in aspheric optical applications. He established the technical foundation for the manufacture of large-aperture optical instruments, presided over the completion of 2A variety of aspheric optical components and systems such as 16-meter astronomical telescope and stepped grating spectrometer, and the main optical systems of principle prototypes such as Yuanyuan-3 and Fengyun-1 have been developed. The International Minor Planet Center named "Pan Junhua" as its permanent star name. He has won the National Science Conference Award, the first prize and the third prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award.
