After 60 hours of torment, Omaila Sánchez Garzón uttered her last heartbreaking words before giving up on her doomed path to survival.

As she was trapped under the roof of her home, crushed underwater by concrete and rubble, a group of journalists watched her helplessly, uniquely documenting the final moments of the 13-year-old's life.

The image of this little girl is haunting – shoulders sunk deep in the water, eyes tired, jet black – that have become synonymous with the eruption of the Amero Nevaldo del Ruiz volcano in Colombia nearly 40 years ago.

After a volcanic eruption, a mixture of lava and ice (called"Lahore"Constantly pouring into the river valley below and rushing towards nearby villages, Omara was swept up in the middle of it, and it was terrible to watch.

The teenager and about 25 000 others were killed in the disaster, and 14 communities were completely destroyed.

Some say she was worse than dead, as Omara was trapped under the ruins of her house for three days.

A deadly landslide crashed into her family's house, flooding the house and everyone inside, but the schoolgirl miraculously survived.

Omara Sánchez Garzón was buried under the rubble and spent 60 hours agony.

Rescuers heard her cries and found her chest sunk deep in a muddy puddle while her body was trapped between the sunken rubble, including a heavy brick door.

Beneath the surface, Omaira's dead aunt's hands still clung to her feet.

Divers couldn't find a way to get her out of concrete without completely breaking her legs, but they didn't have the resources to provide her with life-saving care if her leg was amputated.

It was decided that after several unsuccessful attempts to free her, the most merciful thing to do was to make her more comfortable. People put a tire around her and kept her afloat on the water.

Journalists, photographers, television crews, Red Cross staff and emergency responders all gathered around her, hoping to rescue her at the last minute. But in the painful days that followed, they became her only solace.

Incredibly, with the exception of a few brief scares, Omara remained calm throughout the ordeal and was happy to talk.

Onlookers sang along with her and offered her sweets and soda, hoping to give her some comfort.

By the evening of the third day, Omara began to hallucinate - telling others that she couldn't be late anymore because she had math tests to take.

Her eyes were bloodshot and black, her hands were white, and her face was swollen.

After the eruption of the Nevado Ruiz volcano, volcanic lava mixed with ice rushed to the village.

Despite the pain, she asked the people who stayed with her to leave and let them rest.

Before she closed her eyes for the last time, the tragic teenage girl uttered her heartbreaking last words to the world.

She clutched a piece of debris above her head, calmly looked at the camera and said:"Mom, I love you so much, Dad, I love you, brother, I love you"

Omela died on November 16, 1985, probably as a result of gangrene or hypothermia.

Her brother survived the eruption that killed her father and aunt, and her mother was also in Bogotá at the time of the deadly eruption.

She later said of O'Mela's death"It's terrible, but we have to think about the living. I would live for my son, who just lost a finger"。

After Omaira's death, Colombia** was heavily criticized for being ill-prepared in the face of the volcanic threat.
