Recently, Petapixel published a summary and evaluation of Canon's new products this year:
Canon's EOS R system ended 2022 with a bang, with the launch of the excellent EOS R6 Mark II camera and RF 135mm F 18 L is USM lens. This momentum continued until the beginning of 2023 with the launch of two new cameras and two new lenses. After that, Canon slowed down, although some of the year-end announcements set the stage for a strong recovery in 2024.
Canon has launched four new cameras this year
In February of this year, Canon launched the EOS R8. This great full-frame camera is a great choice for many amateur photographers, and the EOS R50 is an APS-C camera designed for beginners.
Neither the R8 nor the R50 are designed for advanced enthusiasts or professionals, and Canon has released two other cameras this year that continue to cater to amateur photographers.
In May of this year, Canon released the EOS R100, a compact APS-C camera with a true entry** for less than $500. Unfortunately, the camera didn't hit the target.
Canon also released the PowerShot V10 camera in May. While not an EOS R system camera, this all-in-one is worth mentioning as it marks Canon's latest attempt to gain market share in the ** recording segment. Unfortunately, this is a relatively poor camera, despite the fact that it has a sleek design.
Canon's 2023 camera won't excite advanced or professional users. As the company finally sent its EOS M series underground, photographers have been wanting more in the EOS R system. Will the long-rumored EOS R1 finally hit the market in 2024?If so, will it have a global shutter?
Canon has introduced interesting RF lenses this year
While Canon's cameras can't meet the needs of professionals, Canon's lenses do. But before introducing Canon's most exciting lenses, the company announced two new kit-style zoom lenses in February, paired with the R8 and R50 cameras.
Canon RF-S 55-210mm F 5-7The 1 IS STM offers APS-C photographers an 88-336mm equivalent focal length lens compared to the RF 24-50mm F45-6.The 3 is STM is a compact standard zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. They are premium lenses at a good price.
At the other end of the lens cluster is the Canon RF 100-300mm F-2The 8 L IS USM lens was released in April. This lens is designed for professional photography and is also a match. This lens is larger than the typical 70-200mm f28 The zoom lens provides a more reachable range. Canon says it's an ideal zoom lens for indoor sports, motorsports, fashion, photojournalism, and events and work. Getting this high performance doesn't come cheap, as this lens sells for a whopping $9,500.
Canon's next new optical product - RF 28mm F28 cookie shots are back in the ranks of cheap shots. According to Petapixel's reviews, the $299 lens is small and lightweight, making it a "nice little lens."
After a summer of complete silence, Canon returned to the news in October with an RF 10-20mm F 4 L IS STM ultra-wide-angle zoom lens. This red-ring lens has breakthrough optical performance and is the widest range of autofocus zoom lenses. As it turns out, it's amazing too.
Canon released three new lenses last month, but if the A9 III doesn't affect Sony's 2023 rating, Canon's RF-S 10-18M F 45-6.3 is stm、 rf 24-105mm f/2.8 L is USM Z and RF 200-800mm F 6The 3-9 IS USM zoom lens also doesn't affect Canon's rating.
However, while these shots won't affect Petapixel's rating of Canon this year, they deserve more mention, as they will be available to Canon users in early 2024.
Canon RF-S 10-18mm F45-6.The 3 IS STM is the widest range of APS-C lenses in the EOS R system and is a welcome addition to systems that lack APS-C lenses.
As for the RF 24-105mm F 28, which is another "first of its kind" from Canon. This lens is the world's first 24-105mm zoom lens with a constant aperture of 28, will also be available with an optional accessory for power zoom function. It's sure to be a hit for portraits, documentaries, news photographers, and videographers.
Canon RF 200-800mm F6Designed for nature, wildlife, and outdoor sports photography, the 3-9 lens is another example of Canon's use of RF mount designs to develop and design a new mirrorless lens.
Canon rating for 2023
In terms of cameras, the Canon EOS R50 and R100 APS-C cameras are decent at best. The R50 is undoubtedly the better of the two, although I would like it to be as it is $200 more expensive.
On the other hand, the full-frame EOS R8 is really exciting. Currently priced at $1,299, this camera is Canon's lightest full-frame RF mount camera with impressive performance.
Ignore the Powershot V10 as the main focus here is on Canon's mirrorless cameras, the company's 2023 cameras that offer many options for frugal photographers. Unfortunately, they are not all great options.
While the new flagship camera is exciting and gorgeous, most photographers won't spend more than $4,000 on a new camera, and Canon's EOS R system is in desperate need of a new camera that new users can afford.
Against this backdrop, Canon's cameras have earned the company a C+ result. As cute as the R8, but the R100 is just as disappointing.
Even without taking into account the three new zoom lenses planned for a month or two, Canon's lenses this year have had some success. In addition to the affordable new cameras, Canon has also introduced a number of inexpensive new lenses, including the RF 24-50mm F 45-6.3 and RF 28mm F28. Their performance is very good.
Canon RF 100-300mm F2The 8 L IS USM and RF 10-20mm F 4 L IS STM lenses are much more expensive, but the imaging results are also good. They break new ground in zoom range and optical design, and offer professional photographers a new selection of native RF mount lenses. rf 100-300mm f/2.The 8 will be a popular lens for sports photographers and photojournalists, while the RF 10-20mm will be a popular lens for landscape photographers.
The Canon 2023 lens should get a decent A-. I love that Canon does some interesting things with lenses, even if its camera doesn't embody the same innovative spirit.
Overall, Canon 2023 has had a mixed performance. Canon users are still desperately awaiting a follow-up to the EOS R5, which could rival the Sony A7R V and the hypothetical EOS R1, comparable to the Sony A1 and Nikon Z9. However, in terms of footage this year, Canon has done a great job and set the stage for a solid start next year.
Petapixel certainly has high expectations for Canon's performance in 2024, but Canon's performance in 2023 can only be given a B-.
