At the 9th Alumni Luojia Forum held by my alma mater, I was honored to be invited to share as a guest speaker again. I have always had a deep affection for my alma mater, and all my achievements are inseparable from the cultivation of my alma mater. It was from Wuhan University that I embarked on the road of scientific and technological exploration.
Full text of the speech: Dear teachers, seniors, juniors, good afternoon!
I am Lei Jun, an alumnus of the class of 1987, first of all, I would like to extend my most sincere and warmest congratulations to my alma mater, happy 130th birthday of Wuhan University!
I have always had a deep affection for my alma mater, and the small achievements I have made today are inseparable from the cultivation of my alma mater back then. It can be said that it was Wuhan University that shaped me, allowed me to find my dreams, learned the method of learning, and gave me the most valuable wealth in my life. No matter where I go, I will always think of the great support and care given by my alma mater, and my heart is full of gratitude.
Wuhan University is the best university in the world".
Five years ago, it was also here that I said: in my heart, Wuhan University is the best university in the world, and there is no one. This sentence caused a huge response online. In fact, it doesn't matter, if you feel that there is a gap, all of us Wuhan teachers, students, and alumni of Wuhan University have a common goal: to build our alma mater into the best university in the world!
What is the good thing about Wuhan University?
Not only is it a long history, achievements and many masters, just talking about the campus environment, our Wuhan University is definitely the best. Take architecture as an example, the old house, the old library, the old gymnasium, etc., fully embody the ideological pattern of the integration of ancient and modern, east and west, is a classic business card of Chinese universities, and a warm picture that we will always remember in our hearts.
Of course, more importantly, the humanistic environment of Wuhan University. The most attractive thing about Wuhan University is that it pays special attention to the free development of people, the style of study is diverse and inclusive, never let students study to death, but let students fully develop independently, the teachers are also very friendly, and the relationship between teachers and students is particularly harmonious. I'll give you a small example, when I was in school, the teachers rarely dragged the class, because as soon as the class was delayed, the students knocked on the table**, and the teacher immediately understood.
In August this year, I held my fourth annual speech, with the theme of "Growth", which mainly talked about how I went to university and started my own business, and most of the content was about Wuhan University. With so many friends on the scene today, I ask a question, how many people have seen my speech in August?
In my memory, there are many stories about Wuhan University, and I only talked about a small part of them in my speech, mainly five experiences: when I first entered the university, I watched "Silicon Valley Fire" in the library;Complete four years of college credits in two years; How to become a program master;Undergraduate in the journal ** article;and the experience of trying to start a business in college.
Some netizens commented: This is a large-scale enrollment publicity of Wuhan University. This netizen is right, this speech is to promote Wuhan University and to warm up for the 130th anniversary of Wuhan University.
Wuhan University also had a crucial impact on me: it was here that I embarked on the path of scientific and technological exploration.
My path to technological exploration.
The path of a lifetime.
I like chemistry before the college entrance examination, and I wanted to apply for the chemistry department at first. I have a good brother who wants to report to the computer. I changed my mind temporarily and applied for the computer science department of Wuhan University.
In retrospect, everything was arranged for the best. As soon as I entered university, I fell madly in love with programming, which can be said to be "addicted to it".
At that time, there were too few opportunities to get on the computer, I thought of many ways, and even did such a "bad thing" with my classmates - secretly climbed through the window in the middle of the night, slipped into the computer room, played with the computer all night, and was almost caught red-handed by the teacher. Of course, this is not right, and I would like to thank my alma mater for its tolerance back then.
The teachers have always encouraged us to climb the heights in technology, not to stick to the textbooks, and to learn if we are interested. I remember a team competition we organized, we won the first prize in the country, and we passed the school's four-year curriculum in one month. At that time, some of our teachers told us, "You have passed the four-year course and are ready to graduate." Don't take any more classes in the future. So, we all went to the computer room to study the operating system, the compilation principle, and even some hacking techniques.
We are such a group of people, proud of programming, proud of research, proud of breakthroughs. I remember my leader saying, "Lei Jun is a good person, that is, he understands technology." "I have a wish to stay in front of a computer for the rest of my life, to immerse myself in the world of technology for the rest of my life.
The beginning of the business. By 1990, I was ready to fulfill one of my life's dreams – to start a company. At that time, we had a saying, that is, "the road to take in my life is to start a company of my own".
I had two dreams. The first dream was to make an operating system. I like UNIX very much because I think Unix is the best operating system in the world. I think this is a great opportunity for me to create a new, better operating system that belongs to China. I call this operating system "Son of the East".
My company at that time was called Infinitus, and it was my first company in my life. The first company we chose was "Old East", which is an industrial zone in Wuhan City, and the conditions are very poor. Later I realized that some things seem to be in poor conditions, but they are actually very good opportunities. Because of the poor conditions, we will have a big advantage in terms of cost, and it is also close to the school.
What we thought at that time was to make this "son of the East" a Chinese DOS. As a result, I did it for more than a year, but I didn't make it. The reason is simple, we don't understand anything. We don't understand the product, we don't understand the market, we don't understand sales, we don't understand management, we don't understand anything. But we've been doing it for more than a year, and we've made a system that's similar to DOS, called the "Video Game Operating System".
Our company started on this operating system. This operating system is based on 6502 CPU, and I remember that at that time we were making video game consoles, including cases, controllers, programs, and so on. At that time, the price was cheaper than PCs, and we sold them to people who couldn't afford PCs. In fact, now that I think about it, our product has no competition with the PC.
The project failed, but we learned a lot. Especially when it comes to products, for the first time, we really think, "Who are we going to use this thing for?"For the first time, we really think, "Is what we're making someone else needs?".For the first time, I really thought, "What the hell do you have to do with this product to make money?""This has a very important impact on our future products.
Go to the Internet.
At the end of 1992, I was leaving Wuhan University for family reasons, and our company moved to Beijing. After moving to Beijing, we also found it too difficult to make game consoles, so we switched careers to make mobile phones.
At that time, I thought about it a lot, and finally decided to make a mobile phone for the following reasons: First, I have always liked communication. Since I first started college, I have worked for a summer at China Telecom below Liangsukou, and I have worked in the signal and system laboratory of the Telecom Institute. At that time, China Telecom did a lot of research, and finally found that the best thing was a mobile phone.
