For many people, the mobile phone has become a "new organ" extending from the body, and the machine is a daily portrayal of contemporary people. Whether it's for work, study, or entertainment, our eyes spend more and more time on this screen every day. According to the 2022 State of Mobility Report, the average Chinese spend nearly 5 hours a day. Dry eyes, astringent eyes, and myopia have also come one after another as a corresponding cost, and have gradually become problems that cannot be ignored.
So how exactly do mobile phones affect our visual health? Is there a way to play with your phone without hurting your eyes?Recently, NetEase Inspur Studio invited Tao Yong, a well-known ophthalmology expert, to teach the relationship between mobile phone screens and eye health, and tested the screen eye protection ability of 16 mainstream mobile phones on the market. Through Professor Tao Yong's explanation, we have formed a clearer understanding of how to use mobile phones correctly and how to judge the eye protection level of mobile phones.
In the test in which Professor Tao Yong participated, the 16 mobile phones tested basically covered the most common brands and models on the market. The test also specifically selected the four scenarios that are most likely to have a negative impact on the eyes:
First, the intensity of natural light and the color temperature change from moment to moment. Therefore, the brightness and color temperature of the mobile phone screen should be dynamically consistent with the surrounding light environment, which can reduce the repeated adjustment of pupil opening and closing caused by light contrast, reduce the visual load, and make it less likely to produce visual fatigue.
Second, the human eye is naturally accustomed to sunlight that changes slowly in real time, while electronic screens usually present a single and constant light intensity. To accommodate this variation in light, the human eye needs to make additional adjustments, which in turn increases the load on the eye. Therefore, compared to reading paper books in natural light, looking at electronic screens is more likely to cause eye fatigue.
Third, the color temperature of the screen is similar to that of the sunlight at noon, and it contains more blue light. This will inhibit the secretion of melatonin in the human body and make you wake up, so playing with your mobile phone before going to bed will make you more and more unable to fall asleep, and even more will disrupt the normal rhythm of tear film secretion on the surface of the eye and induce dry eye syndrome. By gradually reducing the blue light in the screen light, it can help melatonin secretion to be normal, making it easier for people to fall asleep.
Fourth, for some light-sensitive people, screen flickering can exacerbate eye fatigue and even cause tearing. Because the flicker of the screen will constantly cause the pupil to dilate and shrink frequently, the sphincter muscle of the pupil will be fatigued. Generally speaking, when the adjustment frequency of the light is above 3125 Hz, it can be considered "flicker-free". If the mobile phone screen can also increase the dimming frequency, it can reduce the visual fatigue caused by strobe to a certain extent.
Looking at the tests, the majority of phones did not pass or only passed 1 test, with the OnePlus 12 passing 3 tests and only the Honor 100 Pro passing all 4 tests. I have to say that although major manufacturers are promoting how eye-friendly their screens are, the real test results are not satisfactory. On the road of eye protection, mobile phone manufacturers still need to speed up.
As the only eye care champion to pass 4 tests, the Honor 100 Pro's performance deserves to be followed by other manufacturers. It is understood that this mobile phone is equipped with a "Glory Oasis eye protection screen", which integrates a series of Glory self-developed eye protection technologies such as natural color display, natural light-like eye protection, sleep aid display, 3840Hz ultra-high frequency PWM dimming, etc., which truly realizes the effect of "all-day eye protection" and can provide real and effective safety guarantee for users' eye health.
In the field of health display, Honor has been deeply cultivated for many years. According to the data, in the past three years, Honor has invested 1 billion in R&D expenses in eye care technology. Screen eye protection has become an important DNA of HONOR products. In this era of frequent eye health problems and increasing attention to national health, I hope that more manufacturers can increase their investment in eye care technology like Honor, so that eye care is no longer just a product gimmick, but truly a powerful shield that can protect users.
