Why do art exhibitions in the wet market attract young people?

Mondo Social Updated on 2024-01-19

On November 29, an art exhibition quietly squeezed into two wet markets in Chengdu.

The theme of this event is:"Nature around you – go to the vegetable market".The exhibition was opened separately in the Changshun Street Store and Qunkang Road Store in Chengdu Yimin Vegetable Market, curated by artist and architect Liang Chen, and presented by six artists: Cao Yang, He Liping, Liu Qingyuan, Liu Zhao, Xie Fan, and Zhang Xiao.

The wooden sign hanging in the vegetable field was created by the artist.

According to Liang Chen, this exhibition emphasizes the method of "micro-intervention", adhering to the principle of "minimal intervention", neither crowding the space of the vendors, nor affecting the time and way of their business. Therefore, you can't see the large-scale works on the site, and you can hardly even feel that there is an art exhibition going on, and the most intuitive feeling is: this vegetable market is a little different.

Hey, there's an exhibition in the vegetable market.

Liu Zhao uses the words "what to eat today" as the material for the interactive work.

In fact, if you think about it, many ancient cities also gradually developed from one or two markets. Liang Chen, the curator of the exhibition, said, "The market means that there is **, it means the gathering of people, and when they gather to settle down, the prototype of the town is born." ”

While each of the participating artists was preparing their works, they went to the market again. Liu Qingyuan noticed that when he walked into the vegetable market, the first thing everyone said to greet was "What do you want?"It was a simple question that made him feel extra warm – someone who cared about what you wanted to eat and was ready to provide it to you in any way he could.

Works by artist Liu Qingyuan.

He also found that each store values its brand and reputation. So, he simply named his work "What Do You Want", combined with the "township aesthetic tone", and made more than 30 woodcut prints and signs, which were hung in the vegetable market.

The exhibition will run until the end of March next year, and at the wet market, everyone has to make a choice - choose what you plan to eat for lunch or dinner, and choose what ingredients to buy.

In the Yimin Vegetable Market on Changshun Street, just take the escalator to the second floor, you will see a small sculpture made by the artist Zhang Xiao, which looks like a statue of the land lord is surrounded by an electronic scale, and the sculpture base is impressively marked with three big words "What to eat".

Zhang Xiao's work "To Each His Love".

In the minds of Chinese, this problem can be called the "ultimate problem of the universe", and it is the ultimate problem that we have to face every day.

But in fact, the title of this sculpture is "To Each His Love". Look closely at the statue's hands, holding a turnip in one hand and a cabbage in the other—you immediately remember the phrase "turnip and cabbage, each with his own love." ”

Zhang Xiao, whose hometown is in Yantai, Shandong, also set up a small "booth", with the theme of the big apple, a specialty of his hometown, and designed a series of red cultural and creative small things, and also equipped with a character sculpture riding a battery car.

Zhang Xiao's works. A few steps further along, you can also see another sculpture of him in a stall selling spices. This sculptural image with a head like a crayfish, and I can't even find the introduction of the work at my feet, only the boss's payment code.

Xie Fan, the participating artist, is also one of the initiators of the exhibition. In addition to his creations, he is also the owner of a restaurant. On the opening day of the exhibition, Xie Fan used fresh ingredients freshly sourced from the market to create a "Nine Big Bowls" on the spot at an empty stall prepared in advance in the wet market, as a performance art project that was highly adapted to the exhibition environment.

Xie Fan's other work, "Documentary Exhibition of Ingredients", classifies and traces the history of some common vegetables and fruits in the vegetable market, such as peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, lemons, and kumquats, and displays the "botanical genealogy" of these ordinary ingredients together with the real objects, supplemented by a concise and bright background, which is refreshing. Liang Chen said that this work has a parent-child function, and most of them can attract children's interest.

The exhibition will last until the end of March next year, so be sure to visit it if you have time.

When "art" and the most vivid fireworks of the "vegetable market".

Combine both. What kind of sparks will be sparked?

Here's what the check-ins have to say.

Chengdu "post-90s" customers:

The art market will become a new online celebrity check-in place

A vegetable market is not only the end point of farmers' vegetable field cultivation, but also the starting point of table delicacies into pots. The little happiness contained in the vegetable market is vividly expressed by this art exhibition of "Nature Around You - Let's Go to the Vegetable Market".

Words such as "What to eat today", "Go upstairs to buy vegetables", "Eat more teeth" and "Nutritious" are written on wooden signs, and on the side of the text, corn, eggplant, trumpets and other common items in the vegetable market are drawn. On the afternoon of the 3rd, the reporter walked into the vegetable market of Yimin Cai Changshun Street, and looked up to see that the top of the corridors was full of such wooden signs, and at the intersection of some vendors' stalls, stacks of leaflets were neatly placed, which wrote the relevant content of the art exhibition and the personalized art design "What to eat today". At the top of the flyer, there is a row of shopping bags in a variety of colors such as red, blue, and pink for customers to choose from.

On the side of the escalator upstairs, there is also a slogan of "what to eat today", which is full of design, playful and interesting, and has a sense of atmosphere.

In the afternoon of the same day, Liao Tingwei, a "post-90s" woman in Chengdu who was selecting dishes in the vegetable market, was very curious about this artistic vegetable market. "I think this kind of vegetable market is so foreign! She told reporters that this was the first time she had seen such a special vegetable market decoration. She said that she used to know about the vegetable markets with creative paintings and decorations in Europe, "I didn't expect that there are also vegetable markets in Chengdu that are comparable to the art markets of other countries." ”

Like Liao Tingwei, Chen Tiangui, who came to this art market for the first time, was full of freshness in his eyes. Looking at the hanging wooden plaque, he smiled and said, "I often buy groceries here, and the first time I came here was more than a year ago, and it was the first time I saw such an interesting decoration." You see, 'go upstairs to buy groceries', it's simple and easy to understand, and there is a horn drawn on the side, which is very vivid and fun. ”

Chen Tiangui told reporters that if there were more such art markets, visiting the vegetable market would definitely be one of the biggest hobbies of young people in Chengdu in their free time. "I believe that in a short time, this kind of art market will definitely be a new Internet celebrity check-in place in Chengdu. ”

Out-of-town tourists:

Seeing the paintings in the vegetable market is like entering a fairy tale

I hope that not only Chengdu people, but also tourists can often experience this rare special check-in place, which will make our Chengdu tour more satisfying. Ms. Wang, from Xi'an, came to Chengdu on the weekend and stumbled upon this artistic vegetable market.

Now it is very convenient to take the high-speed rail from Xi'an to Chengdu, and it takes more than 3 hours to arrive. This is the first time I've seen this kind of unique market, and as a tourist, I hope to open it all year round, so that tourists from all over the country can experience this unique market. Ms. Wang said that if she has the opportunity, she will definitely bring her mother and daughter to Chengdu again. If a family comes to play, they must choose a homestay that can cook by themselves. In the meantime, I can come to such a vegetable market once a day to buy vegetables, and the experience is better, "If my daughter sees the paintings in the vegetable market, she must feel that she has entered a fairy tale world." ”

Ms. Wang said with envy, "Chengdu people are really happy, can you share happiness with every tourist like me?"”

Xiao Chen, who is studying in Mianyang, took advantage of the weekend to come to Chengdu, in addition to gathering with friends, and experiencing "art in the vegetable market" by the way.

My classmates told me that there was a vegetable market in Chengdu recently, which was very different and very 'artistic'. Xiao Chen said that she and her friends took several ** photos and prepared to send them to the circle of friends, "holding tomatoes in one hand and a handful of vegetables in the other, with the vegetable market in the background and a wooden sign above ...... head that says 'what to eat today'."At first glance, it has the temperament of a female chef god. ”

dishesField vendors:

There are more young people, and in addition to taking pictures, they also start to patronize the stalls

As a vendor in Chengdu Yimin Vegetable Market, Zhang Ming is very satisfied with the sudden rise in the "style" of his vegetable market. "I think art is lofty, and the wet market is down-to-earth. Many people think that they are impossible to combine, but we can do it in Chengdu. For the first time, I was surprised and excited to see the change in the market where I had been staying all day. ”

The market is bustling and inevitably noisy, "Buy what you should buy and leave quickly, this is the Xi of people who came to me to buy vegetables in the past, and the children will talk a few words of gossip, but the young people will not stay long." Zhang Ming revealed that since there are these works of art, old customers are choosing dishes and talking about such works, "The popularity is naturally there." ”

Not only regular customers, but also more and more young people are coming here. "There are more young people coming here now than before, and taking pictures as soon as they come to the vegetable market is also a new feature. Zhang Ming said that many young people, after taking photos and punching cards, often go shopping again, buy some broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, and go back to make healthy meals. "Nowadays, young people can only eat takeout when they are busy, and when they are free, they are often willing to be kind to themselves and eat healthier. ”

She told reporters that such literary and artistic elements into the vegetable market, not only attracted young people, but also turned some of them into their new customers, "The price of vegetables in our vegetable market is not expensive, and for young people, it is very cost-effective." ”

The art vegetable market uses the most down-to-earth language and form to express the most real life of Chengdu people, which is the happiness that Chengdu brings to everyone.
