How to do it on a cold winter day

The feat of crossing the Huangpu River?

In this issue, together with the body.

From a former Jiangnan shipyard.

From the perspective of a senior engineer.

Recall that this period happened in the 60s of the last century.

The story of crossing the Huangpu River in the harsh winter.

On January 10, 1969, the sky was cloudy, the wind was cold, the temperature plummeted to minus 7, and thin ice could be seen everywhere on the ground.

Thousands of workers huddled on the riverside wharves of the Jiangnan shipyard, the nearby shore and the decks of ships moored in the river, watching intently as a bitterly cold cross of the Huangpu River. Even the sailors in the distance** were attracted by the sound of gongs and drums and rushed to the deck**.

There are 50-60 winter swimmers participating in the river crossing activity, in addition to the winter swimming team of Jiangnan Shipyard, the primary school students of the third primary school of Shanghai Changle Road were invited to participate, among which the older ones are in their 40s, and the younger ones are only years old.

Since 1967, Jiangnan Shipyard has built a new 20-meter and 50-meter large standard swimming pool, and has carried out swimming activities among the employees of the whole factory, and the physical fitness and swimming skills of the employees have been greatly improved through exercise, and on this basis, a long swimming team has been formed. The long tour team has held many activities to cross and cruise the Pujiang River. In 1968, the winter swimming was launched, with more than 100 participants.

On January 10, the temperature on the day of the crossing of the river was minus 7, and the temperature of the Huangpu River was measured to be 4. All of us participating in the winter swim changed into swimsuits and swim trunks, boarded the tugboat and sailed to the opposite shore, and then launched in turn according to the predetermined formation, in an orderly manner, and swam towards the Jiangnan shipyard on the opposite bank.

The wind and waves on the Huangpu River are high and the water temperature is low. But everyone's emotions were high, and the nervousness and fear of cold before entering the water were all gone, and everyone was surfing in rhythmic movements. Just as the team was swimming near the middle of the river, a tugboat in the distance led a long train of barges to approach quickly, and the whistle sounded loudly, and the situation was urgent. The leader of the group had swam into the river, and most of them were still behind, and it was obviously extremely dangerous to rush through. Therefore, everyone decided to tread the water in the same place as the first traveler in the river, and wait for the long barge to sail before meeting back and forth. The barge cut the winter swimming team in two, and it lasted for 10 minutes. The barge sailed by, stirring up layers of waves, causing the winter swimmers on both sides to float up and down and jolt violently, feeling that the water was uncontrollable. Fortunately, the team was well-trained and helped each other to hold on until they reunited and lined up again. In this way, from launching to landing, he stayed in the water for 30 minutes, but no one was left behind. Thousands of employees felt the tenacious fighting spirit of the winter swimmers, and were deeply moved and encouraged, and some even shed tears of excitement on the spot

On that day, I swam at the front of the line with a red flag in hand. After going ashore, everyone jumped into the warm bath prepared in advance by the factory, and only then did they feel numbness and pain in the tips of their fingers, toes, cheeks and other parts, and their whole body began to tremble, and their backs were cold. We hugged each other tightly and jumped in the pool, massaged our joints to slowly warm our bodies, then rinsed off hot showers, replenished food and drank ginger soup before we fully recovered.

This winter swim on the Pujiang River is unprecedented in terms of low water temperature, long time, large number of participants, large age difference among participants, and unfavorable objective conditions. This feat also left a deep impression on the participants, and it is still fresh in the memory after many years.

Winter swimming tips

1.Control the time according to the environment and its own state

The appropriate length of winter swimming depends on your physical condition and external environment (temperature, climate, etc.).

2.Let your body temperature drop naturally and simply warm up before entering the water

After taking off your clothes, don't rush into the water, stop in the locker room for a while, let the body temperature drop naturally, and reduce the tingling sensation after entering the water.

Before entering the water, remember to rub the waist, knees, shoulders, elbows and other parts that are sensitive to temperature quickly to make the temperature rise and reduce the probability of injury.

3.Don't be reckless, don't swim alone

Even the "veteran drivers" of winter swimming can encounter danger during their workout, so you should never go to winter swimming alone or without a lifeguard. If you experience cramps or other discomfort during winter swimming, immediately seek help from others or get out of the water by yourself.

4.Avoid standing still in the water

It doesn't matter how fast or slow you swim, but if you don't move in the water, your body temperature will drop quickly, which can be dangerous. Once you feel that you can't swim anymore, remember to go ashore first and then rest.

5.Winter swimming is good, but don't be greedy

As a general rule, the frequency of winter swims should be kept to less than twice a week. After all, there are plenty of other ways to exercise in the winter besides winter swimming.
