Two unforgettable battles.

Han Dinggu's recollection: September 22, 1941 at about 10 o'clock in the evening. The 2nd Avant-garde Brigade (Captain Maruyama Masasa) of the Uzawa unit of the Japanese Central Column drove from Xinshi and arrived on the river bank on the north side of the Tongle Bridge, where the troops of the 95th Division of the Kuomintang immediately met them. That night, after an all-night fight, a part of the Japanese army occupied a high plateau on the left side of the main road.

Early the next morning, the Japanese sent an additional brigade to attack again from the foot of Shending Mountain on the right. At that time, the Kuomintang army was about 1,000 people, and they were stubbornly defending the south bank of the river. Relying on the three-story cement fortress position, they resisted stubbornly and fought very fiercely. It was afternoon.

At four or five o'clock, the Japanese side increased artillery and seized a high platform in the southeast and southeast, and the Kuomintang troops were still resisting to the death. The battle did not end until about 3 p.m. on 15 August, and it lasted for two days and one night. One regiment commander of the Kuomintang army was killed, and quite a few died. More than 10 people died in my gray room, apparently after being captured, they were held there by Japanese soldiers with machine gun fire. When my father, Han Lanfu, and I went to bury the body, the blood in the ground had already congealed into lumps.

Zheng Yuan recalled: After the battle of Tongle Bridge, there was another battle of Piaofeng Mountain, which was also very fierce. Piaofeng Mountain is about 15 kilometers south of Xinshi, and the mountain is steep. At that time, the 284th Regiment of the 95th Division of the Kuomintang was stationed here. The regiment headquarters is located in Yinziao (near Congtang, Xinshi Township).

At that time, I was in my 30s and teaching at Shangwuchang Temple School. The Battle of Piaofeng Mountain was fought during the second attack on Changsha by the Japanese army (that is, the third fall of Xinshi). In late December 1941, the 6th Division of the Japanese Army crossed Mishui and attacked south on two flanks through Xinshi. On the morning of the 30th, the right flank entered Mashi Mountain, and the left flank entered the front line of the main position of the 95th Division in Yapo Mountain. After the Japanese captured Yapo Mountain, the 23rd Infantry Wing entered the front edge of Piaofeng Mountain. Huang Hong commanded the 284th Regiment to immediately ** and give a head-on attack. The 284th Regiment set up a position and surrounded the headquarters of the Japanese wing on the left and right. The besieged Japanese troops rushed to the left and the right, and launched many charges, but failed to break throughLater, several Japanese planes came and strafed them with machine guns, and the infantry wing charged several times before they captured Piaofeng Mountain.
