The Israel Defense Forces recently announced the death of a senior military officer. The officer was Colonel Assaf Hami, commander of the "Southern Brigades", who was captured and killed in the "Akosa flood" attack launched by Hamas on 7 October.
Although the Israeli army initially claimed that Colonel Hami had been abducted, it was almost two months later that he acknowledged his death. In the attack, Hamas eliminated four senior brigade-level officers of the Israeli army at one time. The loss of these high-ranking officers was undoubtedly a heavy blow to the Israeli army.
Due to the generally low rank system in the Israeli army, the highest rank in the army is Lieutenant General Chief of Staff, and in fact the highest rank is Major General. Therefore, the elimination of 4 colonels and brigade commanders by Hamas in one day is equivalent to the loss of 4 major generals in one day by the Russian army on the battlefield in Ukraine.
Judging by the sacrifices of these high-ranking officers, the actual battlefield of the Israeli army may be much higher than the figures they advertise. For an army, the loss of senior officers with real combat experience will have serious consequences, including a blow to morale and combat effectiveness.
This may explain why Israel has been withholding the news of Colonel Hami's death. However, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has already created too many people**, and if this trend continues, perhaps a truce will only be held when neither side can afford the consequences of the war.
