The struggle for hegemony between Chu and Han has always focused on the struggle between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu, and the new work "Farewell My Concubine" by Beijing Renyi Small Theater does the opposite. This work recently premiered at the Beijing International Theater Center, focusing on Liu Bang and Xiang Yu's wives Lu Pheasant and Yu Ji.
"Farewell My Concubine" is another Mo Yan work that has appeared on the stage of human art after "Our Jing Ke". In Mo Yan's view, "all historical dramas are modern dramas", he reshaped the relationship between several historical figures, and he skillfully imagined a new ** space: what kind of situation would it be if Lu Pheasant and Yu Ji met in Chuying?On the literary basis of Mo Yan's works, director Lin Cong starts from the perspective and feelings of female creators, bringing some possibilities for interpreting history mixed with female tenderness and determination.
Lu Pheasant and Yu Ji, at first, they were diametrically opposed, the former was old-looking, held hostage by her husband as a hostage in Chu Ying, and indulged in the power struggle for the world, while the latter was beautiful and young, deeply trapped in the love of children, and after a few rounds of confrontation, they took a step in each other's direction.
The change and immutability of the human heart becomes very intriguing at this time. Her husband's snub made Lu Pheasant yearn to be pitied and cherished from the bottom of her heart, and she was full of the overall situation, half sober, half her escapist rhetoric and disguise. Yu Ji, who does not hesitate to go away alone to resolutely push her lover to the grand ambition and hegemony, in the final analysis, all the motivation still comes from her deep affection for Xiang Yu. Struggling in the whirlpool of troubled times and power, even if they seem to be completely opposed, in fact, there is only a thin line between them, and the depth and subtlety of human nature are quite worth savoring the fun and excitement in "Farewell My Concubine". This also puts forward quite high requirements for the actor's interpretation skills, young actors Sun Yilin and Lu Lu play Lu Pheasant and Yu Ji respectively, their rivalry has shaped most of the brilliance in the whole play, Sun Yilin's Lu Pheasant is vicious, resolute, lonely, and has a complex but layered personality, which is particularly impressive.
In terms of presentation form, "Farewell My Concubine" adopts the mode of immersive viewing this time, the seats and the stage disappear, and a "Chinese army tent" opens the curtain, inviting the audience to sit around and watch the secrecy of the night of the siege, the close-range "snooping", and the female perspective hidden under the history books used in the whole play achieves each other, coupled with the silhouettes of the buildings left by the actors around the "military tent", and the scattered sounds when the night breeze blows through the wind chimes, the tension on all sides and the barrenness of historical smoke and clouds are quite well expressed.
