Xu Genbao, the gravedigger of Shanghai football

In November 1843, Shanghai was opened, which was the beginning of the modern history of blood and tears of a nation. After the opening of Shanghai, its culture was called "Shanghai-style culture".

Shanghai-style culture is a unique cultural phenomenon in Shanghai that is gradually formed on the basis of Wuyue culture and the integration of modern industrial civilization originating from Europe and the United States.

This kind of culture, from architecture, stage, literature to food, all created a new style of Chinese and Western fusion at that time, it is full of charm because of delicacy, and inclusiveness and brightness.

In such a cultural atmosphere, Shanghai-style football has become famous.

Fang Xuqiu

Before Xu Genbao went to the beach, in fact, the queen army known as "Xiao Zhuge " was the successor of Shanghai-style football, of course, it was Fang Yunqiu earlier.

In the early 70s of the last century, all provinces across the country began to re-establish local football teams, and Fang Yunqiu served as the head coach of the Shanghai team.

In 1973, the National Football League was restarted, and the Shanghai team won the runner-up that year. Under Fang Yunqiu's tutelage, the players have solid basic skills, and the coaching style that pays attention to the sense of transmission and control has begun to emerge.

In 1980, the Shanghai team was suddenly relegated, and in desperation, Fang Suqiu was invited to come out again, hoping that he could lead the Shanghai team to regain its strength.

After Fang Yunqiu took over, he immediately persuaded Ding Longfa and others to return to the team, and at the same time used a group of young players to start building Shanghai-style football, and returned to the first division the following year.

For many, the impression of Shanghai football was made in 1983, and this was also Fang Xunqiu's proud work.

The final of that year was held at Jiangwan Stadium, and it was crowded. In the end, the Shanghai team and the Guangdong team were tied in the regular minutes and had to go through a penalty shootout.

Guangdong captain Chi Minghua missed a penalty, putting the Shanghai team on the top podium, and the coach and main players each received a bonus of 760 yuan.

Not long after winning the National Games, Chinese football ushered in a "one-size-fits-all policy", and the head coach of the local team must be under the age of 50. Fang Yunqiu can only give up the position to assistant coach Wang Houjun, which is why he is the successor and promoter of Shanghai-style football.

It is no accident that Shanghai football won the title of "Shanghai School" at that time, and the Shanghai team at that time was not inferior to Guangdong football in terms of technical craftsmanship, and it was not inferior to Liaoning and Shandong players in terms of physical fitness.

Shanghai football's "fade out of Chinese football began in the professional league, when Wang Houjun failed to become the head coach of Shanghai Shenhua, and instead of "rushing to force the circle".

Rush to encircle

In the last century, the glory of Shanghai football started in the alley, where there was no professional football field, and the small alley became a paradise for football teenagers to grow up after school.

In the 80s, Xu Genbao led the "Football Remote Provincial Team" to achieve excellent results in national competitions, and was more prominent among coaches of the same age. After that, the Football Association formed the national second team, and Xu Genbao took office.

The first international match of the national second team was against the visiting Dutch Philippe team in Nanjing, and the pressing style of play of the whole team was completely different from that of other domestic teams, and the stands of Wutaishan Stadium were excited.

Later, Xu Genbao led the National Olympic team to Kuala Lumpur, shouting loudly the slogan of "one heart, you must qualify", leaving no way out for yourself.

But as a result, the last game only needed a draw to qualify, but the South Korean team scored three goals in nine minutes and lost the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics.

Xu Genbao, who was beaten, hid himself in the Jinjiang Hotel for more than half a month when he returned to Shanghai, and he not only lost the position of head coach of the National Olympic Games, but even the position of head coach of the national team that he had fought for was quietly taken away.

At that time, Shanghai Tang football was booming, and all walks of life were very enthusiastic about the development of football, and Shanghai extended an olive branch to Xu Genbao.

On December 10, 1993, Shanghai Shenhua Football Club was officially established, becoming the first football club in China to be decoupled from the Sports Commission and managed by an enterprise, and it is also one of the earliest professional football clubs in China.

Yu Zhifei became the first chairman of Shanghai Shenhua, and Xu Genbao was hired as the club's first head coach.

In the early years, Shanghai football paid attention to technology and awareness, dexterity and speed, focusing on teamwork and cooperation, most of the players had good basic skills and skills, and the game was full of ornamentation, but the confrontation was slightly weaker.

Shanghai Shenhua is the most authentic and primitive vein of Shanghai football, and Xu Genbao's rushing has injected rigidity and courage into Shanghai-style football, which is more than dexterous and lacks toughness, and has created a "new Shanghai-style style" of Shanghai football.

In 1994, Shanghai Shenhua's squad was dismal, with some players leaving with their previous coaches and some being eliminated due to physical fitness tests.

In addition to Fan Zhiyi, Li Xiao, Cheng Yaodong and several other national two veterans, most of them are young players who have not played in the league, and Shanghai Shenhua was once regarded as a relegation favorite.

But in 1995, Xu Genbao's "rushing siege" and Jin Zhiyang's "little fast spirit" became two scenery in Chinese football.

In the battle of Tianwang Mountain, which decided the ownership of the championship, Shanghai Shenhua defeated Guoan at home with Xie Hui's rush shot, and rushed to the league championship at full speed by stepping on the shoulders of the opponent.

Gravediggers

In fact, Xu Genbao many years ago only grasped the root of the problem of Chinese football, he paid close attention to the team's physical fitness and style, and launched the tactics of "rushing and encircling", which is to say that it is a high-position to force and grab in a "foreign atmosphere".

This seemingly simple and crude tactic has worked very well against Chinese teams. The midfielders of the Chinese team often have poor passing and control skills, as the so-called "one pressure and three panics", and it is easy to make mistakes when they put pressure slightly.

But after 1995, with Mao Yijun, Cheng Yaodong, Liu Jun and others retiring or transferring one after another, the hardness in the Shenhua formation is far less than before.

The newly rising core players such as Shen Si and Qi Hong are all technical talents with outstanding footwork and insufficient confrontation, and Shenhua's personnel composition and technical characteristics are increasingly biased towards technical play.

In this case, Xu Genbao still advocates that rushing to force the circle is tantamount to playing up the shortcomings and avoiding the strengths, so Xu Genbao's Shenhua has never been able to win the league championship since 1995.

Since 2002, Shanghai Shenhua has begun to introduce a large number of northern players, and their participation has made the team's style tougher, but also made the taste of Shanghai-style football gradually fade.

At the same time, the replacement of foreign coaches in the team is like a marquee, not to mention the Shanghai-style football style, and the team's style of play is always wavering. Several changes in the club's investors have restricted the development of the team to a certain extent.

Shanghai Shenhua even sold Song Boxuan, Feng Renliang, Wu Xi, Wang Dalei and other main players due to the financial crisis, resulting in a big injury to the team's vitality.

In the 2016 season, under the coaching of the new Spanish coach Manzano, Shanghai Shenhua once saw the prototype of pass-and-control football, but it returned to the extensive type after kicking and kicking.

At that time, there were Cao Yunding and Bai Jiajun in the team, and the composition of the team and the coach's tactics determined the final style of play.

The only reason why there is no tactical value in rushing around is that it is nostalgic because of its change in Chinese football tactics.

What people may miss is not Shanghai-style football, but the peak era of Chinese football that cannot be returned, although it was still dark at that time.
