Hungary, an alternative existence among the member states of the European Union!

Mondo International Updated on 2024-01-30

Among the EU member states, Hungary does hold a different position than other countries on certain issues. Recently, the EU overwhelmingly voted 26 to start accession negotiations with Ukraine, but Hungary firmly refused to start Ukraine's EU accession negotiations at the negotiating table. Until then, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had been blocking EU aid to Ukraine and trying to weaken European unity. Macron even said that Orban would never be allowed to hold the EU hostage. So, what is the reason for Hungary to do this?

Creative Inspiration Center Hungary's position is closely linked to its domestic political environment. Viz Orbán's ruling party, Fidesz Orbán, has been in power in Hungary since 2010. Domestically, Orban pursues nationalist and conservative policies, emphasizing national sovereignty and national interests. To a certain extent, this policy reflects the Hungarian public's concerns and dissatisfaction with the European integration process. Therefore, in international affairs, Hungary** often shows reservations about the process of European integration.

Secondly, relations between Hungary and Ukraine are complex. Historically, part of the eastern regions of Ukraine was once the territory of Hungary. Although the region is now part of Ukraine, the historical ties between Hungary and Ukraine make relations between the two countries delicate. After the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis, Hungary did not actively participate in the EU's sanctions against Russia, but called for a solution through dialogue and negotiations. This position partly reflects Hungary's cautious approach to relations with Ukraine.

In addition, Hungary's disagreements with other EU member states on a number of issues are also one of the reasons for its refusal to support Ukraine's accession. For example, Hungary has a certain degree of disagreement with other Eastern European countries on migration policy, economic cooperation, etc. This makes Hungary's position within the EU more awkward, and it also affects its voice in decision-making related to Ukraine.

Hungary's position on Ukraine's accession to the EU is influenced by a number of factors, including the domestic political environment, its historical ties with Ukraine, and its differences with other EU member states. In future international affairs, Hungary is likely to continue to adhere to its unique position in order to safeguard national interests and national dignity. However, it remains to be seen whether Hungary will be able to adjust its position and meet the challenges with other EU member states as the European integration process progresses.
