Negotiations between EU lawmakers and member states, which began on Wednesday, finally came to an end after 17 hours in the early hours of Thursday morning. Since 2019, there has been a heated discussion in the EU on AI legislation. According to Reuters, the two sides reached a tentative agreement in the early hours of Thursday morning on how to regulate the use of fast-growing generative AI applications, such as ChatGPT.

The specifics of the deal are not yet known, but according to a Reuters interview, it will be one of the biggest hurdles to a final deal. In addition, negotiations on the use of AI for surveillance purposes are still ongoing. EU lawyers want to ban the use of AI for biometric surveillance, however, many EU member states want exceptions to the rules in terms of defense and military operations.

Due to the rapid development of AI technology, it has been difficult for all parties to reach an agreement on this issue. A possible draft bill in the EU could serve as a model for other countries that are also dealing with the regulation of increasingly widespread AI technologies.
