EN71-3 specifies large limits for migratory elements in accessible parts or materials of toys, including antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, tin. This part tests the amount of soluble elements that are dissolved by simulating the conditions under which they come into contact with stomach acid after swallowing.
EN71-4 specifies limits for chemical substances used in chemical test equipment and related activity equipment, as well as test toys in the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, microbiology and environmental science.
EN71-5 stipulates the restrictions and requirements for the use of hazardous substances in chemical toys, mainly covering molding and casting devices, miniature table devices, modeling clay devices, plastic casting devices, etc.
EN71-6 specifies the requirement that toys that are not suitable for use by children under 3 years of age but may be dangerous should be labelled with an age warning.
EN71-7 lists the permissible colorants and preservatives in finger paints and their limits, as well as the migration limits for heavy metals and the limits for the use of major aromatic amines.
EN71-9 specifies the total migration limits for organic compounds involving flame retardants, colorants, aromatic amines, monomer substances, solvent migration, respirable solvents, wood preservatives, etc.
The above standards comprehensively test and regulate different aspects of toys to ensure that the product is safe in the market. However, these tests and certifications are not free. EN71 testing and certification is usually carried out by a professional body, and the fee schedule will vary depending on the institution, test program and product type.
