Why do we have fewer and fewer friends in middle age?

Mondo Social Updated on 2024-01-31

In the journey of life, we will meet many people, some of whom are like meteors that briefly streak through our lives, and some of whom are like stars that illuminate our lives for a long time. However, as we get older, our circle of friends seems to get smaller and smaller, and our former friends gradually disappear into the crowd. Why is that?

In middle age, the pace of our lives accelerates significantly. Trivial matters such as work, family, and children occupy most of our time, and we often work hard for life, neglecting to communicate and connect with friends. Our busy work leaves us with no time to maintain those distant friendships, and over time, friends are like distant stars, slowly disappearing from our sight.

Our values change over time. After going through the ups and downs of life, we have a deeper understanding and awareness of many things. This change can lead to disagreements and misunderstandings between us and our former friends, which can lead to alienation of friendships. In addition, as we get older, our social circles shrink and more time and energy is devoted to family and work, which makes us less and less connected to our friends.

Our needs and interests change at different stages of life. When we are younger, we may be more interested in seeking excitement and novelty, while in middle age, we may be more focused on stability and comfort. This change can lead to a decrease in the topics we have in common with our friends, which can affect the development of friendships.

Although we have fewer and fewer friends in middle age, it doesn't mean that our friendship will disappear. On the contrary, we should cherish those friends who have accompanied us through the ups and downs of life, and maintain this rare friendship with our hearts. After all, true friendship stands the test of time and distance.
