Dongguan is a city full of prosperity and hustle and bustle. This is where I used to live, and a testament to an ugly history that no one knows.
That year, I came to Dongguan after graduating from high school and joined a well-known electronics factory. I thought it was a place full of opportunities and hopes, but the reality was a big disappointment.
When I first entered the factory, I was full of enthusiasm and anticipation. However, over time, I realized that the working environment here was not as rosy as I had imagined. Electronics factories are full of rules and regulations, and these systems are often designed to exploit our time and energy. Working up to 12 hours a day, and the wages are very low, making it miserable for us migrant workers.
What is even more serious is that there is an ugly phenomenon that no one knows about here - sexism. In electronics factories, female employees are treated particularly unfairly. Their wages are lower than those of their male counterparts, and their opportunities for promotion are measurable. What shocked me even more was that there was blatant sexual harassment here. Some male employees harass female employees without hesitation, relying on their superiors or veteran employees. And female employees can only endure in silence in order to keep their jobs.
I once witnessed an example of this. A male boss calls a female employee in the office, closes the door, and begins his "lecture". However, this "reprimand" became more and more unorthodox, and finally turned into outright sexual harassment. The female employee did not dare to resist and could only endure this behavior.
This phenomenon makes me feel very angry and helpless. I felt like I and my colleagues were trapped in a dark cage, not knowing when we would be able to escape this dark reality.
However, I did not give up hope. I began to work with my colleagues to put forward our demands to the management. We want to improve the working environment, reduce working hours, increase wages and eliminate gender discrimination. We want to be able to get the respect and rights we deserve in this factory.
However, our demands have not been taken seriously and addressed. Management only responded to us perfunctorily, saying that our proposal would be considered, but in reality nothing was done. They even suppressed and threatened us, so that we did not dare to continue to resist.
In this environment, I felt more and more depressed and helpless. I started thinking about how to get out of here and find a new way out. I know it's not a long-term solution, but I hope to be able to secure a better future for myself and my colleagues.
Before I left, I made an initiative to all my colleagues: let's leave this place together! We needed a new workplace, a place where we could use our talents and achieve our dreams.
This initiative has received a lot of response and support from colleagues. Together, we left that ugly electronics factory and started a new life and work. Although this road is not easy, we always believe that as long as we unite and work hard, we will be able to usher in a better future!
