Ali disbanded the Damo Academy's Quantum Research Laboratory.
It is rumored on the Internet that it is financial pressure, and Ali's current economic situation is that it is impossible to spend money.
Dharma Labs has made breakthroughs in the field of quantum chips, designing two world-leading single-bit and two-bit precision quantum chips. However, these achievements have not been able to translate into commercial profits.
However, a technological breakthrough does not mean a commercial success. Due to the technical difficulty and cost of quantum computing, even the world's leading technology companies struggle to achieve profitability. Therefore, although the two chips of the Dharma Lab are leading in technology, they still cannot get rid of the loss-making situation.
There are many reasons for this. First of all, the technical threshold in the field of quantum computing is very high, which requires a large amount of capital and human resources. Secondly, the current application scenarios of quantum computing are still relatively limited, mainly concentrated in a few fields such as scientific research, finance, and pharmaceuticals, and have not yet achieved large-scale commercial applications. Finally, because the performance and stability of quantum chips need to be further improved, the current quantum computers cannot meet the needs of practical applications.
Quantum chips, computing and communication are indeed the key to the future.
Many Chinese people have seen relevant reports, and China has made a major breakthrough in quantum communication technology, and the results are quite gratifying.
For example, recently, Pan Jianwei's team at the University of Science and Technology of China successfully realized the long-distance (53km) free-space quantum key distribution during the day for the first time in the world, verifying the feasibility of building a satellite-to-ground and inter-satellite quantum communication network based on quantum constellations in the future
Among them, the world's first quantum science experiment satellite "Micius" has successfully achieved the first satellite-to-ground quantum communication in the world, laying a technical foundation for future large-scale quantum network and quantum communication experimental research.
In terms of patents, in quantum communication, Chinese patents rank first, accounting for 54%, while the United States 24%;Sub-measured, China 49%, the United States 32%, the rest of the country is too far behind. Overall, in terms of quantum information technology, China is not inferior to the United States, especially in patent applications, which has surpassed the United States.
It seems that quantum is really a big move to overtake in corners, although the tortuous course of Alibaba's quantum laboratory will not affect the progress of China's quantum technology.
Then, one of the most important determining factors is the fundamental research aspect of quantum mechanics. As we all know, China's basic science has always been weak, and many research focuses on technology and applications, such as quantum communication and quantum measurement, which are applied disciplines.
In terms of basic research in quantum mechanics, the top universities are MIT, Harvard University, Caltech, Oxford University, Stanford University, and Cambridge University. These universities are all internationally renowned universities, and most of them are in the United States, and the research in these basic disciplines feels that the upper limit of quantum applications is high.
Overtaking in corners is not a blind pursuit of efficiency, and the importance of basic research should be put on the table, so as to avoid another Huawei-style encirclement and suppression.
