Ocean sketching with a casual feeling

In the coastal areas around Fuzhou, there were so many historical sites, villages, and ports that I had never been to – we always seemed to yearn to go far away, but we forgot that there was still such a beautiful scenery around us.

On the way to sketch in Lianjiang, we broke into the alleys of an unknown fishing village. It resembles a grey castle made of stone and cement, with stone houses built against the hillside, densely packed into a huge and cramped community like the city of Rio de Janeiro. After crossing the path, everything suddenly opened up, and the Beimao fishing port under the sunset finally appeared in front of you.

The splendid sunset has soaked the harbor and the sea, and the clear and secluded distant mountains reflect each other, and the artistic conception is very beautiful. I hurriedly sat down to draw it, but the sunset sank in such a hurry, and before the ink on the paper could dry, it had disappeared into the sea. And in the twilight, we also lost our way in this intricate seaside ancient city.

When we arrived at the Fool's Wharf in Niutouwei Village, Fuqing, we encountered a fairy tale theater on the sea: countless white windmill giants stood between the sea and the sky, trying to turn their arms and gently smash the marshmallows. Fueled by the sea breeze, floating cloud spirits dance lightly between colorful ships and red and white lighthouses, decorating the sea and sky with their figures. In sketching, there will always be such unexpected fantasy and freshness, which makes people feel that the beauty of the ocean is unreal.

I was also struck by the village of Chida. The panoramic view of Chida village over the sea from the top of the crown gives you the illusion of being in an ancient city-state of the medieval Mediterranean. The ancient and dark city walls and piers that have been integrated with the reef resist the invasion of the turbulent waves over the years, and guard the rows and colorful buildings on the islands and reefs, forming a beautiful and spectacular maritime landscape. Behind him, countless reef islands, fishing rows, boats, and windmills form a magnificent phalanx, as if they are about to stretch to the end of the sea. Such a shocking visual experience can naturally inspire inspiration and desire for artistic expression. In the pavilion of viewing the sea, a group of people devoted themselves to sketching for a day, and each had a gain.

What do we feel when faced with the ocean?

On the eve of departure, because of mundane things and because I haven't sketched for a long time, my heart is still a little entangled. But the anxiety gradually subsided after entering the state. The magnificent beauty of the ocean, the dedication of the pen, and the exchanges and exchanges between teachers and friends make people forget the fetters of real life for a while. The days of sketching are pure and pleasant, and everything will become a good memory. Sketching is also full of unknowns and challenges, whether it is the joy of getting a good manuscript or the frustration of facing a difficult situation, it can always affect and disturb my mind.

The vastness and inclusiveness of the ocean has a healing magic, and in the face of it, I can always calm myself as usual. It seems that we also need a little bit of the courage and strength of the sea to deal with the same complicated and turbulent "impermanent" human world - to accept setbacks with an open-minded mind, and to accommodate prejudices with a broad mind, which is also what sketching has brought me.

I like to go out to sketch, and I also like the feeling of being on the road, because the people and things we meet on the way always inspire us and never forget.
