On December 7, the 2023 Young Scholars Symposium on River Basin Geography hosted by Hohai University was held on the Jiangning Campus. Well-known experts and scholars from the Department of Earth Sciences of the National Natural Science Commission, Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing University, Nanjing Normal University, as well as representatives of teachers and students from the School of Geography and Remote Sensing of Hohai University attended the seminar, and Yang Guishan, President of Hohai University, attended the seminar.

Yang Guishan said in his speech that the school inaugurated the School of Geography and Remote Sensing of Hohai University in September this year, which is an important strategic layout made by Hohai University for the new journey of development, and it is also a major measure for the school to strengthen the traditional advantageous disciplines of water conservancy engineering to extend to the foundation, actively respond to global climate change and national carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, actively serve the major national strategies such as the protection of the Yangtze River and the ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin, and open up a new track for development and shape new momentum for development. It is of increasing practical significance to carry out theoretical and practical research on the river basin as a whole, and I hope that all experts will make suggestions and suggestions for the construction and development of river basin geography in the school, and also hope that the school can contribute the wisdom and strength of the river and sea to Chinese geography, Jiangsu geography, especially river basin geography!

At the seminar, Professor Zhang Yongguang of Nanjing University, Professor Chen Min of Nanjing Normal University, researcher Duan Hongtao of the Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and researcher Shi Kun of the Institute of Geography and Limnology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made invited reports on hot issues such as remote sensing monitoring of abnormal methane emissions, construction of land simulators in the Yangtze River Delta, quantitative remote sensing of lake carbon sources and sinks, and the impact of extreme high temperature on lake warming. Four young scholars from Hohai University also gave invited reports on the development and coupling of terrestrial ecosystem models, the intelligent interpretation and analysis of remote sensing in watersheds, the land-atmosphere interaction process and the driving mechanism of extreme events, and the impact of phenological changes on ecosystem carbon and water fluxes and coupling.

According to reports, the academic seminar of young scholars in river basin geography is also the first academic conference held after the establishment of the new School of Geography and Remote Sensing of Hohai University, and teachers and students in the fields of geography, remote sensing science and technology of Hohai University participated in the seminar. Before the seminar, the unveiling ceremony of the School of Geography and Remote Sensing of Hohai University was held in Jiangning Campus.
