Volvo began developing an electrified version of the S90. According to Technikensbard, Volvo has confirmed that it is working on a project codenamed "V551". Volvo is a brand that has been more agile in developing its electrification strategy than its competitors, and due to its quick moves, it can now launch a diverse lineup of electric vehicles. It's just that the electric vehicles that have emerged so far have focused on SUVs and crossovers.
Volvo plans to launch an electrified version of the S90 to fill a gap in its electric sedan lineup. The electrified version of the S90 will most likely be named the ES90. At the beginning of this year, Volvo applied for the ES90 trademark right in the United States. However, due to confusion with the Lexus ES lineup, a different naming strategy may be adopted at the actual mass production stage.
Volvo has already produced a pre-production prototype of the ES90 on an assembly line in China. The vehicle will be extensively tested as a "validation vehicle". Like the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90, the ES90 is built on the "SPA2 platform".
It is expected that the powertrain and battery pack will share a significant portion with the EX90. The EX90 is equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of 111kWh. It is equipped with dual motors with a maximum power of 402 horsepower and a maximum torque of 784 kg.m。
It is reported that the dimensions of the ES90 are 4,990 mm long, 1,945 mm wide, 1,547 mm high, and have a wheelbase of 3,102 mm. Although the length of the car is 100 mm shorter than the current S90, the wheelbase has been extended by 41 mm, which is expected to ensure a more spacious interior.
Mass production of the ES90 will begin as soon as May next year. Representative competitors include the BMW i5 and the Mercedes-Benz EQ sedan.
At the same time, the ES90 is the first global model developed under the command of the Shanghai engineering team, where Volvo's research and design center is located.
After the ES90 is launched, it is expected to take over the banner of Volvo's most luxurious sedan from the S90. After all, the current Volvo S90 is already a model that has been on the market for a long time. Now the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class have been updated, and the product power of Volvo S90 is not so strong. The design of the special interior looks quite old-fashioned. The interior of the new model will have a stronger sense of technology. Coupled with the blessing of electrification, it will also be better in terms of performance.
And after the ES90 is launched, will the current S90 be reduced in price? Now it has dropped to 300,000 Volvo S90, which may be more cost-effective.
