The first time I knew about CNKI was in 2009, when the teacher of the ancient literature class assigned homework and asked me to refer to CNKI, but I understood it as plagiarism and copied an article from "XX Writer", which was criticized by the teacher;I misunderstood again, and copied an article from "Literary Heritage", which was even more bitterly criticized.
After that, I will probably get the hang of it and will use HowNet. After work, because of the many academic manuscripts, I never leave CNKI almost every day. Its value is approximately as follows:
1. Check the content and source of the citation
Many book manuscripts will cite the text of the journal**, especially some authoritative scholars and journals**, to argue their own opinions. At this time, CNKI comes in.
First, it's easy to check the content of the citation. For example, I once came across a manuscript that frequently quoted Tong Qingbing's "The Writer's Childhood Experience and Its Influence on Creation". At first glance, the text follows the word order, and there is no problem. However, when the citation is checked with the version of CNKI, it is found that there are slight discrepancies between the two in the use of words such as "of", "he", "she" and "in general", "however" and "can be said so", which shows that the author has made some mistakes in the input.
Second, it is easy to check the source of the citation. Now, all citations must be marked with the source, including the author, title, document type identification, publication date, page number, journal name, etc. If an editor opens an inside page of a journal, it is inconvenient to check them one by one, and it may lead to new problems. At this time, you need to use HowNet, and directly enter the title of the article to which the citation belongs in HowNet, and the following interface will appear:
Click on the quotation mark icon on the far right of the image to display the article source information containing each bibliographic item, as shown in the figure below
Using various databases to check the original citations and CNKI to check the journal citations can cover most of the citations in the work.
2. Directly check the original text
Articles in the manuscript, probably:1Published in journals;2.Adaptation and rewriting of the author's other journal articles;3.Some of the ideas, especially the core ideas, have appeared in the author's journal articles.
In the above cases, the journal article** should be proofread with the article in the manuscript. For example, I once edited the preface of a certain book manuscript, and many of the words were half-understood and difficult to understand. Later, I searched for the author's published article on CNKI, and found that the preface had been published in "Classical Literature Knowledge" with other titles, and the text of this version was in word order, and there was nothing incomprehensible(Probably the brilliant pen of the editor of "Knowledge of Classical Literature").。Therefore, I directly referred to the version of "Knowledge of Classical Literature" and corrected the manuscript in my hand to solve the difficult problem.
However, sometimes the author does not indicate the source, or changes the title, etc., and the editor may not find that the article has been published in the journal, so it is difficult to check.
In addition, it is not entirely possible to rely on the journal, after all:1The author may change otherwise;2.The quality of editing by journal editors is not necessarily excellent;3.The requirements for books and periodicals are also not exactly the same;4.The manuscript provided by the author may be different from another version of the journal.
I have encountered all four of these situations, and I have also made some mistakes because I am too superstitious about the published version of the journal. Therefore, the manuscript has been published, which is a double-edged sword, which must be used well and recognized, not blindly.
3. Figure out the author's style and point of view
Around 2019, I edited a manuscript for an old scholar who studied Zhuzi. This scholar has been involved in numerous academic debates, and his views are often contrary to the mainstream; And the style of writing is alternative, resolutely do not use the word "of", a paragraph will always have only one period, I don't like to add the subject, and so on.
When I first started reading the manuscript, I had a lot of headaches, such as encountering some very strange opinions, and I couldn't tell if it was the author's point of view, or if he made a clerical error, remembered wrongly, or something else......
At this time, there are several ways:
1.Ask the author for advice, this trick is the most foolproof, but also the most troublesome, there are hundreds of similar questions in the whole book, it is impossible for the author to answer them, and the author's answers also have similar questions;
2.Read the author's published books, published **, he is also a top scholar anyway, and reading these should be learned.
This is where CNKI comes in handy. **He wrote, criticized him, and was related to the subject**, and as I read it, the editor became familiar with his style, understood his point of view, and learned how other editors dealt with the same confusion as me.
The process of serving that author was long, and as a result, it gave me plenty of time to learn. It has been grinding for more than a year, and the confusion of many manuscripts has been solved, and the author is quite satisfied.
I've made a bit of progress myself, and before that, I was super tired of the sub-department, and I was a complete layman in the sub-department's literature; After that, I was still bored with the sub-department, but I read more or less and gained a little knowledge.
Fourth, enrich their knowledge reserves
To be honest, although I am a book editor, I prefer to read**. Because ** is "skinny" and more professional, readers can quickly capture the core information for their own use.
The journals I read more frequently include "Knowledge of Classical Literature", "Knowledge of Literature and History", "Literary Review", "Jiangsu Local Chronicles", "Chinese Classics and Culture", "Ming and Qing Studies", etc., as well as several published journals, which are basically related to majors and work. The pdf version is from CNKI** to the mobile phone, commuting to the limit in the big city every day, and storing a few articles of interest in the mobile phone**, and flipping through it if you have nothing to do.
Occasionally, there will be a harvest and act on the actual work. In the "Editing and Processing of Academic Book Manuscript Citations and Their Annotations" published in the first issue of "Publishing and Printing" in the first issue of "Publishing and Printing" in 2023, Hou Wenfu of Yuelu Books and Northeast Normal University published "Editing and Processing of Academic Book Manuscripts and Their Annotations", mentioning that some current versions of Zhu Ziqing's "Classic Talks" mistakenly wrote "Qin Huo" as "Qin Annihilation", and the editor did not find it. In fact, these two ways of writing also overlap in the sense, and the appearance is similar, so it is easy to mix. And I encountered this situation in a quotation from the "Classic Sayings", which happened to be because I read this article, paid attention to this problem, and consulted several early "Classics Sayings" to determine that "Qin Annihilation" was wrong;Otherwise, there will be a mistake due to your own knowledge blind spots.
But more often than not, I didn't get anything, I read it, and I quickly forgot about it. But when you are busy and idle, you should pass the time. The bits and pieces of knowledge you read may not be applied to your work, even if you use the WeChat group to brag about it, it's worth it!Editors, it's not a bad thing to have a little more knowledge and a little more miscellaneous, and God knows what manuscripts you will encounter.
Now the reputation of CNKI doesn't seem to be very good, but I think that especially people from the discipline of literature and history should learn to use CNKI, and a lot of information is useful. Choking on food is a very good behavior.
Article**: School book hard work.
