FAO Some 2.2 million people in the Gaza Strip face acute hunger

On December 21, local time, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said in a report that about 2.2 million people in the Gaza Strip are facing severe hunger, and FAO is deeply shocked by the deteriorating food security situation in the Gaza Strip.

The report notes that the risk of starvation increases with each additional day of hostilities and restrictions on humanitarian assistance. Access to food, basic services and life-saving is limited for a large part of the population of the Gaza Strip. High concentrations of people or isolation in rudimentary shelters or areas with no basic services are the main causes of famine risk.

The report estimates that the entire population of the Gaza Strip is in food insecurity between December 8, 2023 and February 7, 2024. Of these, 79 percent of the population is in a state of food security emergency or food security disaster, and at least a quarter of households (more than 500,000 people) face catastrophic acute food insecurity.

FAO said it has been closely concerned about the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the region. As soon as access to the Gaza Strip is available, FAO is ready to deliver fodder (1,500 tonnes of barley), water tanks, veterinary kits and fuel to Gaza to protect livestock and sustain livelihoods.
