Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is currently the only technology option to achieve low-carbon utilization of fossil energy, and it is also the key technology that must be adopted in China to achieve the "dual carbon" goal. In developed countries, CCUS technology is seen as a "winner" to achieve carbon neutrality.

According to the Annual Report on Carbon Dioxide Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) in China (2023) released by the Chinese Academy of Environmental Planning of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, as of the end of 2022, China has 96 CCUS demonstration projects in operation and planning under construction, of which more than half have been put into operation, with a CO[GF]2082[GF] capture capacity of about 4 million tons per year and an injection capacity of about 2 million tons per year, an increase of about 33% and 65% respectively compared with 2021. There are more than 40 projects of 100,000 tons and above, including more than 10 projects of 500,000 tons and above, and a number of projects of more than one million tons are under planning. At present, CCUS is mainly used in the power industry, focusing on coal-fired power plants. At present, 35 demonstration projects have been completed, with a capture capacity of more than 3 million tons per year.

The installation of CCUS in thermal power is an important competitive technical means to achieve near-zero carbon emissions, provide stable, clean and low-carbon electricity, balance the volatility of renewable energy power generation, and play an important role in avoiding seasonal or long-term power shortages, such as inertial support and frequency control.
