He has an indissoluble bond with education. From graduating from junior high school in 1969 in response to the call of the country to go to Yan'an to join the queue and become a substitute teacher, to 1977 after graduating from the mechanical department of Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University) to stay in the school to teach, and then to later serve as the president of Beijing Normal University and the president of the Chinese Society of Education, Zhong Binglin used decades of time and experience to interpret the concept and feelings of being a teacher.
In the days when he was in Yan'an, Zhong Binglin experienced the happiness of being a teacher for the first time, and had a special feeling for rural education. This experience made him pay more attention to educational equity, and believed that policy compensation for rural children was a matter of course. However, at the same time, he also opposes the "one-size-fits-all" approach to education in the name of educational equity, arguing that educational equity is not equal to average, and that the ideal state is that everyone can receive an education that suits them.
With the rich experience accumulated in higher education work and the familiar laws of higher education, Zhong Binglin was transferred to the Department of Higher Education of the National Education Commission in September 1996, becoming the youngest director of the Department of Higher Education at that time. In this position, he traveled all over the country, did a lot of investigation and research, actively promoted the reform of college education and teaching, explored the quality assurance system of talent training, and launched and implemented the 21st century college education and teaching reform project.
In April 2001, Zhong Binglin was appointed as the president of Beijing Normal University. He described the transition as a "homecoming" for the teaching profession. In the face of the centennial of Beijing Normal University and the situation of domestic universities competing to become a world-class university, he led the team of Beijing Normal University to embark on a new road of "cultivating research-oriented and first-class teachers to meet the high-end needs of the society for teachers".
In 2012, Zhong Binglin left Beijing Normal University to serve as the president of the Chinese Society of Education. In this position, he was dealing with the entire Chinese education system. He and his team of education societies have brought together primary and secondary schools through various forms such as principals' forums and education salons to jointly plan education reform.
Although the role of life is changing, Zhong Binglin's original intention of education has not changed. He firmly believes that "everyone can receive an education that suits them and everyone can become a useful person in society" is the dream of education. The key to realizing this dream lies in practice and continuous progress in the process of educational reform.
