Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) announced on Friday that it will carry out two nuclear facility projects in 2024.

We will work with the Institute of Nuclear Energy and New Energy Technology (INET) at Tsinghua University," Rohadi Awaludin, head of the Brin's Nuclear Power Research Organization, said in a statement released here by Brin.

The first project involves the enhancement of nuclear accelerator technology, and the second project is the *** nuclear reactor project.

Brin is currently developing an accelerator-driven system (ADS) to produce radioisotopes. Accelerator units play an important role in addressing the challenges of managing radioactive waste from nuclear reactor operations.

The radioisotope production project is located in the nuclear reactor area of Serpong, South Tangerang City, Banten Province.

"We are focused on the production of radioisotopes, which is the current national demand," Avaruddin said. ”

In 2024, Brin, together with foreign partners, will begin designing the Small Modular Reactor (SMR), a fission reactor that is smaller than conventional reactors.

SMR technology has the potential to support the national energy security of archipelagic countries such as Indonesia with low investment value and greater operational and maintenance flexibility.

Avaruddin said the reactor is safer because it can withstand high temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius, eliminating the risk of fuel melting due to high temperatures.

Reactors are safer. We are still in the early stages of development and are in the process of designing," he informed.

This year, Brin has achieved 1,217 research results.

Most of the research deals with environmental sustainability, with 266 research topics, 220 energy research topics, 218 food research topics, and 156 health research topics.
