Recently, the Tainan High Court convicted two Taiwanese of the second instance of attempted organ harvesting and drug trafficking, and sentenced them to 5 years and 10 months and 5 years and 5 months in prison respectively.

According to the Chiayi District Prosecutor's Office, the man surnamed Wang and the man surnamed Lin joined a human trafficking gang in Taiwan, luring Taiwanese who lack money and are eager to find a job to Cambodia on the condition of "high salary" and "clerical work", and contact buyers in Cambodia who have human organ needs through local introductions and other means. The organs of the deceived person are then harvested for profit. The two of them were in charge of going to the airport to confirm that the deceived person had successfully boarded the plane to Cambodia.

At the end of December 2021, the gang fooled a man in his 20s in Chiayi County, Taiwan, with a basic salary of NT$6 to 70,000 to help him find an administrative job in Cambodia. The latter, eager to make money, agreed. The gang lured the man to the hospital to complete liver, kidney, X-ray and other examinations on the pretext of health examination.

After passing the health examination, the gang contacted a man surnamed Ye, a buyer of human organs in Cambodia. The two sides negotiated that the victim would pay NT$500,000 for boarding the plane and NT$500,000 within 4 hours of getting off the plane. On July 27, 2022, a man surnamed Wang and a man surnamed Lin went to Taoyuan International Airport to deliver their passports, air tickets and other documents to the victims. The man, surnamed Wang, continued to monitor and ensure that the latter boarded his flight to Cambodia. But after the victim arrived in Cambodia, the buyer surnamed Ye gave up the purchase for some reason, asked for a return, and refused to pay. The victim was left at the airport and was able to return to Taiwan with the assistance of the relevant Taiwan authorities. In August, ** arrested the man surnamed Wang and the man surnamed Lin. In the conversation between the two, the prosecution found a large number of references to the removal of organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys, and corneas of the Chiayi man. In the first instance, it was found that the two had attempted to harvest other people's organs by fraud, and that they were also convicted of drug trafficking, and that they should be sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison respectively. In the second instance, the original verdict for the crime of human trafficking was revoked, and the sentence was changed to the crime of attempted organ harvesting by fraud and the crime of drug trafficking, which should be executed for 5 years and 10 months and 5 years and 5 years and 5 months respectively. The Tainan High Court pointed out that there was no evidence to prove that the gang was a for-profit structural human trafficking organization before June last year, and that Wang Nan and Lin Nan did not apply the relevant provisions on organized crime, and the original trial court found that it was inappropriate.
