Painting the walls with fresh colors is one of the best and easiest ways to beautify your home. It's relatively easy, and it's fun to experiment with new colors and décor.
Once you've prepared the walls by scraping off old layers of paint or removing wallpaper, sanding blemishes, and applying primer, you're good to go.
Ladder. Screwdriver.
Caulk to fill any holes or cracks between molds or in corners.
Oblique window brushes. Wide brushes or paint rollers and trays.
Tray lids (or plastic wrap) keep paint fresh when not in use.
Paint roller extension rod.
Lacquer. Blender (free with the purchase of paint).
Painter's masking tape.
Clean the rag. Remove curtains, curtain rods, mirrors, carpets, and hardware (if possible). Move all furniture to the room** and cover it with a rag, or move the furniture to another area entirely. Cover the floor and fixtures with a drip cloth. Tape the woodwork. Tape all plastic droplet cloths. Wrap the plastic around the light fixture. Use masking tape to cover any hardware that can't be removed.
Clean all surfaces as needed.
If you are using oil-based paint, keep away from any heat, sparks, or open flames. Turn off stoves, power tools, appliances, and other sources of electrical ignition. Don't smoke. Keep the fire extinguisher within easy reach. Keep the area ventilated – doors or windows open – until all steam is gone.
Apply primer if needed. Let it dry, then gently sand any bumps until smooth.
After priming or before spraying, use appropriate caulk to fill the gaps between walls, ceilings, crown moldings, and other interior decorations.
Using an angled brush, apply 2 to 3-inch strips of paint around the top and bottom trim. You won't be able to reach these areas using the scroll wheel.
The most effective way to paint a large area of a wall or ceiling is to use a roller. It will make the finished project smoother compared to using brushes. Attach the extension rod to the roller handle to reach the height. Fill the paint tray with paint. Dip the roller into the deep end and roll it over the rib portion of the tray to evenly cover the roller.
A good way to paint is to roll up and down on the wall, creating thick vertical stripes. Once you're done with the vertical stripes, move the scroll wheel left and right on the diagonal of the stripes to get an even effect.
