In the past few days, Wen Zhiyong, director of the Dongfeng Weir Protection Service Center, has been traveling between the main canals in the irrigation area to repeatedly check the construction progress and renovation of the project. He was worried that he would not be able to complete the irrigation in the "window period", and he was also afraid that he would "hurt" the precious legacy left by his ancestors.

Dongfeng weir is located on the left bank of the Jiajiang section of the Qingyi River, a tributary of the Yangtze River. Since ancient times, agricultural irrigation along the Tsing Yi River has developed. According to historical records, in the first year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1662 AD), Wang Shikui, the then commander of Jiajiang County, led the squires and people to build a weir to divert water from a long cage of bamboo and stone in the left bank of the Tsing Yi River. After that, the weir changed its name several times, and finally called Dongfeng Weir.
Wen Zhiyong introduced that in the long river of development for more than 360 years, Dongfeng Weir has experienced floods and droughts, and the head of the canal has been continuously moved upward, but the engineering system has remained unchanged, and it has continuously played the role of irrigation, drainage, urban flood control and urban environmental water use, and has become a typical representative work of the non-dam water diversion and artesian irrigation project along the river in Sichuan and Shu areas. In 2014, Dongfeng Weir was included in the first batch of World Irrigation Engineering Heritage List, becoming the first World Irrigation Engineering Heritage Site in the province.

Wen Zhiyong explained: "Dongfeng Weir has a management system that coordinates between the government and the private sector, and it is about uninterrupted joint maintenance. He introduced, Dongfeng Weir irrigation area is divided into 5 level channels, a total length of more than 400 kilometers, according to the tradition of repair, the trunk and branch canals by the first investment, water management units are responsible for maintenance, bucket, agriculture, Mao 3 level end canal by the local villagers to work, in accordance with the regulations.

The record of the repair of Dongfeng Weir can be traced back to the 28th year of Daoguang (1848 AD). In the Dongfeng Weir Water Culture Exhibition Hall, the exhibition was drawn up by the villagers around Dongfeng Weir at that time and engraved on the stone tablet of a "Public Discussion on the Nine Weir Regulations". The regulations established the "joint management of the government and the people" in the repair and management of the weir, and agreed to set up the weir on the 11th day of the first month of each year until Qingming opened the weir.
As a result, year after year, the annual repair has become the "exclusive memory" of the local villagers. Jiang Liping, deputy secretary of the village party committee and secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission, still remembers the lively scene of the adults in the village sweating on the ditch when he was a child. According to the schematic diagram of the renovation project, the construction scope of the Dongfeng weir area involves the main trunk canal, Denggou branch canal, Hexi branch canal, the left branch canal of the threshold weir, the right branch canal of the threshold weir, the pumping station of the drainage canal of the Suchu Reservoir, and the pumping station of the drought-resistant canal. The project task shows that it will continue to build supporting facilities and modernization as the center, the side wall (slope) and the bottom plate will be ecologically lined and improved, and the water distribution capacity of the channel will meet the design requirements through remediation, so as to realize the anti-seepage, roughness and growth rate of the channel, reduce the loss of water transmission, eliminate the potential safety hazards of the building, enhance the safety and stability of the project's water flow, flood control and flood discharge, and ensure the water requirements of the irrigation area.
We stopped the water supply on October 30, and the construction team has been in the site for more than a month, and the progress of the project has reached 40%. Wen Zhiyong said that due to the tight time and heavy tasks, they have asked the construction party to seize the construction period and complete the construction in February next year to ensure the smooth progress of the spring irrigation work next year.

Liu Yi, secretary of the party committee and village director of Xinsheng Village, has begun to look forward to the opening of the Dongfeng weir and the release of water. Just last month, the 500-meter bucket canal, which was jointly funded by the villagers, was completed, and with everyone's active efforts, it took less than a month. "The previous channel was only about 15 centimeters wide and 20 centimeters high, but this time it has been raised to almost 40 centimeters wide and 50 centimeters high. Liu Yi happily told reporters that after the canal transformation and upgrading, it will effectively solve the problem of water for agricultural production and greatly facilitate the people's spring plowing and irrigation.
World Heritage sites should be protected and utilized. To this end, Jiajiang County has carried out a series of infrastructure construction with the protection of Dongfeng Weir as the core in recent years. The new Zen town, Dongfeng Weir style renovation, heritage park, Tsing Yi River cultural corridor construction. Comprehensively display the irrigation civilization of the world's irrigation engineering heritage, and fully tap the value of agriculture, culture and tourism. In 2021, Dongfeng Weir - Thousand Buddha Rock Scenic Area will be promoted to a national 4A-level tourist attraction and become the "golden signboard" of Jiajiang Cultural Tourism.
