Reuters reported on December 18 that Pakistan's imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan used audio clips generated by artificial intelligence (AI) technology to address supporters, the first of its kind in the South Asian country.
Khan, 71, was detained in August and sentenced to three years in prison on corruption charges, the report said. He is also on trial on suspicion of leaking classified documents. The audio was taken at an internet rally of Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which attracted more than 1.4 million views on YouTube, with tens of thousands of people streaming live on other social media.
The report also said that the Tehreek-e-e The party held the event because it faced repression and its leaders were blocked.
In his speech, Khan said: "Our political party is not allowed to hold public gatherings. He also urged supporters to attend the event, which is scheduled for February 8 next year.
However, during the live broadcast, many users across Pakistan complained about slow internet speeds. Pakistan's telecommunications regulator said it was investigating the livestream disruption, but added that internet access appeared to be normal overall. (Compiled by Cai Hui).
