Why didn t Liverpool make it to the Europa League draw?

Mondo Sports Updated on 2024-01-30

Four English clubs – Liverpool, Brighton, West Ham United and Rangers – have all reached the knockout stages of the Europa League – but they will not be involved in Monday's draw.

Liverpool, Brighton, West Ham United and Rangers will not be involved in Monday's Europa League play-off draw as they have reached the round of 16 of the competition. The draw for the first knockout round of the Europa League took place at the House of European Football in Switzerland. The draw for the Champions League round of 16 and the Europa League play-offs will also take place on Monday. The draw for the Europa League play-offs will involve 16 teams: eight teams who finished second in the group stage and eight teams who finished third in the Champions League group stage. To ensure that each runner-up in the group stage will be able to play against the teams that have entered the tournament from the Champions League.

As Liverpool, Brighton, West Ham United and Rangers all qualified for the last 16 of the Europa League as group winners. They won't figure out their next opponent until the eight winners of the play-offs are determined. Freiburg, Marseille, Sparta Prague, Sporting Lisbon, Toulouse, Rennes, Roma and Qarabag are the eight teams (seeded) in their Europa League group. Galatasaray, Lens, Braga, Benfica, Feyenoord, AC Milan, Youngsters and Shakhtar Donetsk are the eight Champions League teams to finish third in their group (unseeded).

Clubs from the same country cannot draw lots against each other in the play-offs. Therefore, there is no chance for Marseille to play Lens or Roma to play Milan. The play-off system was introduced prior to the 2021 22 season. Previously, the team that won the Europa League group will reach the round of 32 alongside the runners-up and the Champions League group stage. The current system rewards the teams that are at the top of the group, such as the four Great Britain teams.
