On 26 November, Malacca, Malaysia hosted the 4th Baba Nyonya Culture Week, showcasing more than 100 exhibits that reflect all aspects of Nyonya life. The theme of the week is "Nyonya", and the exhibits cover a wide range of fields, including cultural relics and paintings and calligraphy. Paintings and calligraphy vividly depict Peranakan's unique style in clothing, pastries and home, while cultural relics include Peranakan costumes, accessories, beaded shoes and other ceramic utensils with strong Peranakan characteristics.
It is reported that during the Cultural Week, Peranakan groups from Singapore, Thailand, Australia and other countries, as well as all over Malaysia, will come to visit the exhibition and conduct cultural exchanges. The president of the Malaysian Overseas Chinese (Baba Nyonya) Association, Yan Yong, said that Baba Nyonya refers to the mixed descendants born of Chinese immigrants and local aborigines between the early 15th and 17th centuries. Men are called Baba and women are called Nyonya. While retaining the traditional Chinese culture, this ethnic group has integrated into the local culture, and has made outstanding contributions to the mutual learning and diversity and inclusiveness of the host country.
Ngan Yong pointed out that with the growing attention to Baba Nyonya culture, Malacca has successfully organised three Baba Nyonya Culture Weeks and two workshops in recent years to further promote this culture. As one of the key projects of the 34th Baba Nyonya International Congress, the "4th Baba Nyonya Cultural Week" and series of activities are organized by the Malaysian Overseas Chinese (Baba Nyonya) Association and organized by Zheng He Duo Wan Xuan (Melaka) Art Museum.
