On October 25, 2023, Dr. Zhang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences finally returned to the embrace of the motherland, ending his nightmare of more than a year in the Myanmar fraud park. During this time, he was forced to engage in online fraud, was beaten and imprisoned, deprived of personal freedom and dignity, and only had a long hatred song, which brought him a trace of warmth and strength.
Zhang is a Ph.D. graduate from the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has been engaged in postdoctoral research. In 2022, he wanted to go abroad to find a job because of family difficulties, but unfortunately fell into the trap of an unscrupulous intermediary and was deceived into becoming an online fraudster in the Myawaddy region of southeastern Myanmar.
In the fraud park, Zhang had to work 18 hours a day, disguised as a woman, and tricked men in Europe and the United States into investing in digital currency through social software. His mobile phone and documents were confiscated, and he was unable to contact the outside world or escape. His income depends entirely on performance, and if he doesn't, he is subject to corporal punishment or fines. His dormitory was an eight-person room, and he was joined by young people who had been tricked, most of them with junior high or high school education.
Zhang once tried to ask his family for help, but was discovered by a fraud gang and was brutally punished by the list of high-quality authors. He was held in a private prison, handcuffed to a wall every day, had to eat only one meal, and endured beatings with wooden sticks. He was held for more than a month, and he suffered great physical and psychological damage.
In such an environment, Zhang felt unprecedented despair and loneliness. He didn't have anyone to talk to, and he didn't have any hope to pin. He could only silently recite a poem in his heart that he had loved since he was a child - the song of long hatred.
The Song of Long Hate is the representative work of the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi, describing the love tragedy between Yang Guifei and Emperor Ming of the Tang Dynasty, as well as the historical changes of the Anshi Rebellion. Zhang said that the reason why he chose this poem is because of its beautiful language and far-reaching artistic conception, which can make him forget his pain for a while, and can also make him feel the vicissitudes of history and the impermanence of life.
I think this poem is very suitable for my state of mind at that time, it has both the yearning for beautiful things, and the helplessness and sadness of reality. I feel that Yang Guifei and I are the same, both poor people who have been played by fate. Zhang said.
Zhang would silently recite this poem in his heart every day, sometimes singing it in a low voice. That's his only fun in the scam park, he says, and it's what keeps him going. "I feel that as long as I can remember this poem, I still have a little bit of humanity and a little bit of hope. ”
Zhang's experience was later *** and aroused widespread concern in the society. With the efforts of China, the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, volunteers, family members and other parties, Zhang finally returned to China on September 5 this year. He said that he is very grateful to all those who have helped him, and he hopes to return to a normal life as soon as possible, and hopes to be able to remind more people to guard against the traps of transnational fraud through his own experience.
