USCIS s new green card extension will automatically extend for two years if it expires

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced on Wednesday that applicants who have filed an I-90 green card extension renewal application since September 26 but have not received a new green card will automatically extend the validity of the old green card for two years. As long as the green card holder files an I-90 petition before the expiration date of the green card, the current green card is about to expire or has expired, and it will be automatically extended for 24 months from the original expiration date.

As we all know, due to the large number of staff of the immigration bureau being sent to deal with the influx of illegal immigrants at the border, not only has the normal legal immigration process been stalled, but also the regular document renewal has been seriously affected, the extension of the work permit, the extension of the green card used to take only three months at most, and now it takes up to half a year or even a year, the applicant is very anxious, especially the holder of the work card, if the employer is not trustworthy enough, the expiration of the work card may be expelled.

The same goes for the green card, the U.S. green card is valid for 10 years, and the green card needs to be renewed when it expires.

In order to solve the problem of inefficiency caused by "long-term accumulation in the United States + the Trump era + the serious impact of the new crown epidemic" and clear the backlog of applications, the immigration bureau has spared no effort to simplify all aspects of various applications in the past year.

In its latest statement, USCIS said it is extending the validity of the old green card for 24 months for applicants who filed an I-90** petition to extend their green card.

USCIS has also updated the I-90**, so if you file an I90** application for a green card extension, you need to be up to date.

The most common situations in which a green card holder needs to replace their green card include:

The green card has expired or will expire in the next six months;

loss, theft, mutilation, or destruction of the original green card;

There is an error message on the received green card that needs to be corrected;

Have legally updated your personal information after receiving your last green card, such as changing your name, etc.;

I lost my green card and never received it.

It should be noted that holders of conditional permanent residents cannot apply for renewal of their green card directly through the I-90**, but need to obtain a long-term green card before they can apply for renewal through the I-90** in the above circumstances.

The USCIS said that the receipt after submitting the I-90 will show the words that the validity period is extended for 24 months, and the receipt and the old green card can be carried at the same time, which can be used as evidence of the continuation of status.
