The 19th-century French writer Alphonse Daudet once said, "For Europeans, the mill is an eternal complex." It is the creator of the staple food of Europeans; The constant rotation of the windmill and the gears driven by it represents the cycle of lifeIt sublimates the invisible wind and water and transforms them into energy for the benefit of humanity. In addition, the mill also plays a role in recording history and legends, and each mill is inscribed with a piece of history and a story. ”

From the Middle Ages in Europe, with the development of agriculture, the mill industry came into being, and those handicraft youths who traveled around by handicraft also became a special existence in the agrarian society. They are young and vigorous, full of yearning for love, and due to the particularity of their work, they wander everywhere, and those love stories and folklore scattered in the mountains and wilderness have become the source of artists' creation.
In 1823, Schubert selected 20 poems from the German poet Wilhelm Müller's "The Last Poems of a Trumpeter Roaming in the Woods" and wrote the vocal suite "The Beautiful Miller". Müller's poems inherit the fantastical and uninhibited spirit of neo-romantic poetry, describing the relationship between the poet's life and nature, and the richness of the inner world.
Müller and Schubert lived at a time that overlapped with the development of the Industrial Revolution. The power of **, from the waterwheel to the steam engine, the idyllic way of traditional handicrafts, is also coming to an end. The era of change has also brought unprecedented unrest and contradictions to society. In the whirlpool of drastic change, young people are unable to look to the future, and are mentally confused, so they have to escape from reality and yearn to return to the old days. "The Beautiful Mill Girl" was born in a changing era, with memories and nostalgia for the old days.
Expressionist painting "The Mill of Bewilderment" by Franz Marc
The story returns to the lush green woods, where the elves sing in the stream. "The Beautiful Mill Girl" tells the story of a miller who travels all over the world, after leaving the previous workshop, walks to a forest and walks in the direction of a stream, and meets a beautiful girl there as he moves the millstone through a waterwheel. The boy falls in love with the miller girl at first sight and immediately falls in love. When love looms and comes and goes, a hunter appears in the story. The girl is infatuated with the hunter, and the mill boy seems to be powerless to recover, so he finally has to leave sadly. Alone he confides in and talks to the stream, and as the brook beckons like a lullaby, the boy finally plunges into the embrace of the flowing water....The love, sorrow, jealousy and despair of youth written by the poet Müller are outlined one by one by Schubert's romantic tunes and the unique melodies of German folk songs.
The Beautiful Miller was one of the first vocal suites to be widely sung and, along with Schubert's Winter Journey, written four years later, is considered the pinnacle of German art song. Compared with "Winter Journey", "Mill Girl" is rarely performed in China, and in this winter, the opportunity to listen has come. Described as "one of the leading interpreters of German art songs today", Matthias Goerne will perform this work with pianist Chen Sa in the beautiful Star City.
At the end of September this year, Chen Sa went to Berlin to rehearse for the first time with Genet in his home piano room, and the two artists had an extraordinary tacit understanding, almost once and again, and collided with many artistic sparks in the interweaving expression of singing and piano sounds, so that there is reason to look forward to the upcoming China tour!
