The AMO (SIMC) Mathematics Competition, the full name of the American Mathematical Olympiad, is an international mathematics competition for primary and secondary school students around the world, co-sponsored by the Southern Illinois University (SIU) and the Singapore International Mathematical Competition Center (SICC). The competition began in 1977 and attracts nearly 200,000 students from more than 30 different countries and regions around the world each year.
The goal of the AMO competition is to stimulate students' interest in mathematics, cultivate mathematical talents, and provide a challenging platform for mathematics competitions. The competition covers a wide range of mathematical fields, including algebra, geometry, probability and statistics, discrete mathematics, combinatorics, and more. The syllabus of the AMO competition is based on the "Common Core" core education standards in the United States, so it not only examines students' mathematical knowledge, but also their problem-solving ability and way of thinking. The question types of the AMO competition include multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank and open-ended questions, with a total score of 100 points, and no points will be deducted for incorrect answers.
The awards of the AMO competition include perfect score, gold, silver and bronze awards. Students who receive a perfect score award will receive a special certificate and the opportunity to participate in programs such as the Global Scholars Program. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards are awarded to the top 2% and 20% of students, respectively. In addition, an honorable mention is awarded to the 10% of students after the Bronze Award.
