The Indiana-class battleships are an important class in the history of the United States Navy.

Development History:1Orders for Indiana-class battleships began in 1890 and were the first attempts by the US Navy to build a class of battleships.

2.The lead ship, USS Indiana (USS Indiana BB-1), began construction at the Crapp & Sons shipyard in Philadelphia in 1891, launched in 1893, and officially entered service on December 20, 1895.

3.A total of three ships were built in this class: the USS Indiana, USS Massachusetts BB-2, and USS Oregon BB-3.

Technical features:1As an early battleship of the U.S. Navy, the design of the Indiana class was influenced by the battleships of the European Navy at the time.

2.The hull was heavily armoured, as well as a 330 mm 35x diameter main gun, which used black gunpowder as the propellant.

3.The ship is equipped with 4 twin 203 mm gun turrets, as well as guns of other calibers, and has strong firepower.

4.Due to its low freeboard, this class of ships is suitable for offshore operations, but it is not very suitable for ocean-going operations.

5.Each ship is equipped with 6 torpedo tubes for firing white-headed torpedoes.

Performance data:1Standard displacement: 10288 tons.

2.Full load displacement: 11688 tons.

3.Ship length: 107 meters.

4.Width: 211 meter.

5.Draft: 35 meters.

6.Main engine power: 12,000 hp.

7.Maximum speed: 28 knots.

8.Carrier**: 9 406-mm guns, 12 203-mm guns, 12 127-mm guns, 100 40-mm guns.

Service dynamics:1The USS Indiana and USS Massachusetts were on duty primarily off the coast of the United States during World War I.

2.In 1919, the Indiana and Massachusetts were downgraded to shore defense ships, and were sunk as target ships in 1920 and 1921, respectively.

3.The USS Oregon was converted into a museum in January 1924, but was scrapped in December 1942 and began dismantling.

4.During World War II, the U.S. Navy recommissioned and commissioned the new battleship USS Indiana (BB-58), which belonged to the South Dakota-class battleships with the BB-58 port number.

5.Construction of the new Indiana began in 1939 and belonged to the South Dakota class, which involved in numerous battles in the Pacific theater, including the Battle of the Gilbert Islands, the Battle of the Marshall Islands, the Battle of the Mariana Islands, and the Battle of Iwo Jima.

6.After the war, the Indiana was dismantled in Japan in 1956.
