Exploring Baijitan One Million Tree Planting Project Turns the Desert into an Oasis

Baijitan, a national nature reserve in Lingwu, Ningxia, was once plagued by yellow sand. However, there is a group of people who take it as their duty to prevent wind and control sand, and they guard the eastern gate of the Yellow River and Yinchuan. We have seen their achievements and experienced first-hand the difficulties of desertification control and afforestation.

Baijitan National Nature Reserve was established in 1985, and the protection objects include 1730,000 hectares of natural shrub ecosystems and 20,000 hectares of small shrub desert ecosystems. They adopted the "1+4" precision sand control technology: setting up grass squares for sand fixation, planting bare root seedlings in spring, sowing grass seeds and spotting lemon sticks in the rainy season in summer and autumn, and planting nutrient bowl seedlings in winter.

This method has achieved remarkable results in Baijitan. Planting trees not only improves the local ecological environment, but also brings certain economic benefits to local farmers. The tree planting program in Baijitan has been advancing at a rate of 20,000 mu per year for more than ten years. Nowadays, people who come to Baijitan will see the beautiful scene of green trees, which is the result of the hard work of the people who control the desert.

In addition, some non-profit organizations are also actively involved. For example, organizations such as L'Occitane and Shanghai Roots & Shoots have joined hands to participate in tree planting and desertification control in Ningxia to contribute to the restoration of the local ecological environment. These actions are not only about improving the environment, but also about enabling our next generation to live on a better planet.

Environmental protection should not be just the business of a group of people, but the responsibility of each of us. We should learn from these desertification control workers and actively devote ourselves to the cause of environmental protection. Hopefully, we can work together to make the planet a more beautiful place.
