According to Reuters on December 17, the Syrian military said on the 17th that a missile fired by Israel from the occupied Golan Heights hit a location near Damascus. Regional intelligence agencies said the attack targeted a stronghold of Iranian militias near Syria's holiest Shia Muslim shrine.
The report quoted a statement from the Syrian military as saying that Syrian air defense forces shot down a number of missiles that targeted rural areas around the capital, and that two officers and soldiers were injured in the attack. It did not provide any details about where the incident took place.
Since Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October, Israel has intensified its attacks on Iranian-backed militias in Syria, as well as attacks on Syrian army air defenses and a number of Syrian troop positions.
The IDF did not immediately comment on the attack.
Two regional intelligence sources said the air strike hit a pro-Iranian Allah outpost in Saidada Zainab, south of Damascus, the report said. The region is home to the holiest Shia shrine in Syria. (Compiled by Lisha).
