Yokohama (Japanese: 横浜;Hiragana: Romanized: Yokohama), an important city in the Tokyo metropolitan area, one of the three major metropolitan areas in Japan, is located in the southern part of the Kanto region of Japan, bordering Tokyo Bay in the east, Yokosuka and other cities in the south, and Kawasaki City in the north. Yokohama is an international port city in eastern Kanagawa Prefecture and the seat of the prefectural government office (administrative center) of Kanagawa Prefecture, and is also designated as one of the cities designated by government ordinance.
Yokohama also has a strong cultural and educational industry, with many institutions of higher learning such as Yokohama National University, Yokohama City University, and Kanagawa University, as well as cultural facilities such as museums and libraries.
