transphorm inc.— A leader in the design and manufacture of the most reliable and only qualified high-voltage (HV) gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors — today confirmed that TDK-Lambda, a leading power supply manufacturer within the Power TDK Group, has released the first GaN-based AC-DC power supply. With a full-featured power rating of 504 W, the PFH500F-28 is the company's latest generation of AC-DC baseplate-cooled power modules. In addition, the power module is the latest Transphorm customer product and demonstrates the benefits of HV GaN, with a 5% increase in efficiency and a 28% reduction in package size compared to the previous PFE500F series.
A wide range of industrial applications have been enhanced.
The PFH500F-28 is a low-profile power module with 28 volts output power designed for a wide range of harsh environment applications, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) power supplies, custom fanless power supplies, traffic signals, and more. TDK-Lambda's redesigned standard power module uses a bridgeless totem-pole power factor correction topology to optimize Transphorm's TPH3206LDG FETs in the popular 8 8 8 PQFN package.
The development was led by the TDK-Lambda Americas Dallas, Texas team and leveraged Transphorm's application support team during various phases of the three-year plan.
We are excited to introduce the new standard PFH series," explains Jin He, Vice President of Engineering at TDK-Lambda. "Our engineers work tirelessly to review new technologies, which will benefit our end customers, to ensure that any new product we release is reliable and a significant improvement over previous models. Our decision to partner with Transphorm to develop our first GaN AC-DC product was largely based on the proven quality and reliability of the power semiconductors, as well as the team's reputation for successful collaboration. Based on our experience, we have released the PFH500F-28 with a three-year warranty and are in discussions with Transphorm for future projects. ”
Transphorm's GaN has so far helped customers produce computational power supplies, servo motors, and telecom power supplies that have shown significant advantages in terms of power density, size, and system cost. TDK-Lambda's power module is also joined, and the PFH500F-28 offers the following advantages over its silicon-based predecessors:
Power efficiency: Up to 92%, 5% better than PFE500F
Power density: 100W cubic inches, 30% higher than PFE500F
PMBUS monitoring and programming (read and write).
Size reduction: from 122 x 70 x 127 mm reduced to 1016 x 61 x 13.5 mm, a 28% reduction
Reduce the size of the external capacitive element.
Thermal Impact: 38% less waste heat and requires less heat sink cooling than PFE500F.
