On December 17, Shanghai Port, the champion of the 2023 Chinese Super League, announced that former Yokohama Mariners coach Muscat became the team's new manager. The full text of the announcement is as follows:
Shanghai Port Football Club has reached an agreement with Australian coach Kevin Vincent Muscat, and Muscat will officially become the coach of Shanghai Port in the new season.
Muscat, born in August 1973, was once an outstanding professional footballer, playing for Crystal Palace in the Premier League, Wolves, Glasgow Rangers in the Premier League, Millwall in the Championship, and Melbourne Victory in the Australian Super League.
Muscat began his coaching career after retiring from football in 2012, winning his transition from assistant coach to coach to decorated coach in Melbourne. He has led Melbourne Victory to the Australian Premier League twice, and is known as one of the representatives of Australia's young coaches. Muscat also has a coaching resume in the Belgian Liga Saint-Truiden and J-League Yokohama Mariners. Since taking charge of Yokohama Mariners in 2021, he has led the team to one J-League title and one Japan Super Cup.
We welcome Muscat and hope that he can help the team further improve its technical and tactical level with his rigorous coaching style, rich coaching experience and diversified football philosophy, and lead the team to create more glory in the 2024 season.
