It takes a lot of practice to establish a reliable recall, and these are the foundations. Take your time and enjoy your trained dog!
Step 1 – Make a specific word or sound meaningful to the dog
Use delicious foods such as possums, dog snack rolls, roast chicken, cheese, or sausages as treats for their training. For dogs, dog recall training is not usually exciting, but it is very important for us owners. So we want to give for the dogs' hard work and make them feel that their efforts are worth it.
When your dog is by your side, whistle or say "come" to him and immediately feed them a small piece of delicious food. We want the dog to think "Noise means super exciting things are about to happen to me!"."So that they start paying attention to it. Repeat this movement 10 times twice a day for a few days.
Step 2 – Train hand touch
Hand touch is a specific behavior used to train your dog so that they know that "recall training" means "touching the hand with the nose" and not "get close to me within 2 meters, but don't let me touch you" or "run fast" towards me ......Then continue to run behind the master".
Place one snack between your fingers and count out more than 10 snacks for training.
Reach your palm towards the dog's face.
Dogs will scout the situation.
When the dog's nose touches your palm, use the clicker trainer to let the dog know "yes".
Reward the dog with a treat in the other hand.
Repeat the above steps until you run out of your snacks.
Take a break and count out 10 more snacks to make more than 10 snacks for training.
Now, this time extend your hand to the dog, but without any food between the fingers, and repeat until you run out of food.
Take a break and count out 10 more snacks to make more than 10 snacks for training.
Now, when the dog touches the ** hand, don't feed the food directly to their mouth, but throw the food on the floor away from you. Throwing away snacks can increase energy and make the game more exciting.
Wait for the dog to turn around and look at you, then extend your hand to the side and wait for them to come back and make a hand touch. Repeat this until you have used all your snacks.
Step 3 – Training that combines whistle and hand touch
Whistle and say "come".
Stretch out your hand.
When the dog touches the palm, click on the clicker trainer to say "yes".
Reward and treat the dogs who complete the mission.
Step 4 – Use it in your daily life
Whistle + hand touch = dog gets dinner.
Whistle + Hand Touch = Dogs can go outside in the garden to scout.
Whistle + touch with your hands = the dog plays the game with you.
Step 5 – Practice Xi actual command recall training with low interference
You can start setting up situations for you to practice Xi recalling your dogs from something they are doing that they find interesting, such as using their sense of smell in the garden or break room. You whistle, they touch your hand, they get a treat, and then they can continue to enjoy sniffing. Start with a relaxed, distraction-free environment around the house and back garden. When you are able to reliably call your dog back to you at home, you can start practicing Xi whistling and guiding your dog with hand touch in a low-distraction environment in public places. From there, you can continue to use the harness and long leash, giving your dog more freedom to explore while still being securely attached to you.
Points to remember:
Your hound may not react to your whistle or verbal recall for a number of reasons. You may need to go back and repeat a few steps of training to strengthen the connection between whistle = good stuff. You may need to experiment and find out what is really good for your dog. Certain foods?Playing games with toys?Try to practice Xi in a less distracting or exciting environment like a break room. Your dog may feel stressed, anxious, or fearful, in which case they are not in Xi state of learning and you need to take a break and give them some time to relax.
If your hound doesn't listen to you, instead of whistling all the time or asking your dog to come over, try to encourage them to come over by crouching, making excited noises, and moving back slightly. If that doesn't work, walk over to your dog and keep it on a leash.
We want recall training to mean good things for dogs, so make sure you don't accidentally punish them because they come back. For example, if the only time they're recalled is coming in from the garden, they may think it's not worth their time, as investigating is much more fun than ending their fun and being stuck indoors!Recall your dog, let them go, let them go back and sniff as a reward, then walk over, put them on a leash and walk back indoors.
