At present, the Indonesian Navy has 2 professional hospital ships, 1 converted hospital ship, and 1 part-time hospital ship, all of which are developed from large dock transport ships (LPDs).
As the world's largest island nation, Indonesia's regional development is extremely uneven, and natural disasters such as tsunamis and typhoons are frequent, and hospital ships have become an important solution: they can be maneuverable, ensure rapid response and expand coverage. In 2008, the South Korean-built dock transport ship KRI Tanjung Dalpele 972 was converted into the KRI DRSOEHARSO 990 (Doctor Soharo) hospital ship. Since then, the Makassar-class 5th ship, the Kri Semarang 594 (Semarang), has become a part-time hospital ship, shuttling between Indonesia's major islands.
On August 29, 2022, the Indonesian Navy's hospital ship Wahidin Sudirohusodo, the first specialized hospital ship of the Indonesian Navy, was commissioned. The Kri Radjiman WedydiningRAT 992 was launched on August 15, 2021 and entered service on January 19, 2023. The new hospital ship, built by Indonesia's PT Pal Shipbuilding Company, is the country's largest self-built auxiliary ship with the rank of colonel.
The new hospital ship is 124 meters long and 21 meters wide8 meters with a displacement of 7290 tons. The hospital ship has a crew of 163 and a crew of 18, and can accommodate 66 medical personnel and 158 patients, with a total capacity of 643 passengers. The main engine is 2 diesel engines, with a maximum speed of 18 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. With a maximum endurance of 10,000 nautical miles and a self-sustaining power of 30 days, it is a platform that can operate independently at sea for a long time.
The ship is equipped with consultation rooms, emergency departments, ophthalmology, orthopedics, operating rooms, inpatient departments, CT scans, X-ray examinations, mobile decompression devices (OFE) and other equipment, which is equivalent to a local C-level hospital or a regional general hospital. In terms of specific admission capacity, 3 surgeries can be performed at the same timeThe inpatient unit has 96 beds, 48 for men and 48 for womenThe ICU can accommodate 4 people, 2 for both men and 2 womenThere is a maternity room and a baby room. In addition, there is an isolation room on board, which can accommodate 4 people, 2 for men and 2 for each sex. As for emphasizing men and women, in addition to medical considerations, Muslim requirements must also be taken into account.
In addition, the ship has a complete means of transportation, including 3 ***1 hangar, 2 flight decks, ambulance ships (dock ships, LCVP (vehicle personnel landing craft, rigid inflatable boats (RHIB). In addition, it can accommodate 4 ambulances, 4 emergency inpatient tents, 2 mobile hospitals (ofe mobile X-ray vehicles, which can go ashore for emergency support. In order to ensure the power demand, there are 5 565kW generators and 1 425kW generator on board.
The new hospital vessel is also based on the South Korean-powered Makassar-class dock transport ship design, with dock cabins and large flight decks, capable of performing a variety of tasks, including fast, flexible and mobile emergency medical and surgical services. The vessel can operate medical ambulance and landing craft, and the vehicle is rich and flexible, and can be used to carry out medical evacuation missions. Compared with the temporary change of career to the hospital ship Kri Soeharso 990, the KRI-991 and KRI-992 are more specialized. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, KRI-992 has been specially equipped with an additional isolation chamber.
The Indonesian Navy believes that the hospital ship has a strategic role. Internally, medical services can be provided to coastal areas and small islands in Indonesia to improve medical conditions in unbalanced areas. In response to infectious diseases, it can be used as a response reinforcement facility and can be used for emergency response in a short period of time. Externally, when a friendly country needs medical assistance, the hospital ship can carry out humanitarian assistance. In peacetime, military diplomacy can be carried out.
In the three years of preparing for the new crown epidemic, KRI-990 and KRI-594 played an important role. One is to provide oxygen. The KRI DR Soeharso 990 is capable of producing 150,000 litres per day, which is equivalent to 20-25 cylinders with a capacity of 6,000 litres. The second is vaccination. Two hospital ships and two new large supply ships will serve as mobile vaccination platforms to administer vaccines to people everywhere. The third is to directly admit patients. The names of the two professional hospital ships and one converted hospital ship are taken from the progressive doctors in Indonesia's independence, who spread the idea of independence and democracy and became the pioneers and national heroes of Indonesia's founding. In terms of quantity and quality, Indonesian hospital ships have taken the lead as a platform where their values can be disseminated.
